Master Suite Design - Built-in wardrobe vs Walk-in closet
Comments (42)I totally agree with cpartist. You are really limiting yourself by staying in the footprint you made for yourself. Considering the investment you will make in the addition, I would want to do everything I could to make this room and possibly the laundry room/office work. I would also think about landscaping. Maybe your bedroom doesnt look to the patio because you move it to the back of the house, but you have succulents and cacti planted in front of the bedroom windows for a beautiful view. I'd start over with a fresh piece of paper and think about every option. I say this because I am doing a master suite addition to my house. I put a lot of thought into what I wanted. The people on this board also really helped me and I hired an architect. We came up with a great plan and will be starting this week on the project....See MoreMaster suite layout
Comments (4)Your last sketch has the most potential IMO. Patricia is right about the sitting area, perhaps that space could be smaller. If it were each closet could maybe be 5 ft deep which would make them more of a walk-in. I would not have double doors into the bath, a single door would allow the hall between the closets to be a little narrower. As far as the bath goes, I would probably opt for a larger shower rather than a small shower plus tub, especially if there were a tub in the other bathroom....See MoreHow would you rework master suite with extra space added to the plan?
Comments (12)Doc-I've been playing with turning the master bath to get the toilet closets closer and possibly make a nicer overall space. I went back through the many photos I have saved for ideas. I sketched out some several variations. This doesn't look at pretty with black boxes, but hopefully gives an idea. I still have an empty corner, but may just have to deal with that. I also give up the vestibule entrance for the closet/bathroom, but at least the door isn't in a horrible location. I'm hoping the space off the bathroom can feel sort of separate (like these 2 photos) (The greyed space/square would all be the mudroom space, mostly for boots and coats. Considering I am hoping to start building within 1-2 months, I am just intending to get the overall plan "better" at this point. I can't wait much longer than that to get started. But, I would love any ideas of working off this change...or something like it, but better....See Moremaster suite addition- how to maximize space
Comments (77)I am not sure. I have another idea but I don't know if it is any better: What if the only full wall is beside the hallway then have a built-in 3'0" high (just enough to fit your fridge below). I would make that built-in 18" deep and run it all the way on that tv wall. You can put your tv on where you have it now and have storage on the left of it. On the right, it would be your fridge with some storage to the left for glasses etc. I would consider making the top of the built-in all the same material and put a table mat where your fridge is to protect the top. You can have shelves on the wall if you wish but I think I would not. Seeing the wall recessed compared to the bottom where you have your built-in would make the room feel bigger even though you use some floor space for your built-in. I would also make your closet 6'6" wide and deal with the problem of 2 persons being in that room at the same time. I think one can choose their clothes while the other is taking a shower. I think it is worth that compromise to keep your bathroom and office wider....See MoreRawketgrl
