Tis the season for Yellow Jackets. This is the time of the years when you will see them everywhere. Usually if you do see a concentration of them in one area they've found something they like or they do have a nest nearby or both. They do nest in the ground, but they also like (from personal experience) compost piles and any crevice like a stone wall or a hole in your foundation. Late last fall I went into a basement room in my parents house and found the room swarming with the critters. Somehow they found a crevice in the foundation and decided to set up shop. They may be visiting leaves of plants for the moisture. I always see them on the leaves of my bean plants when I go out to pick the beans. They also continually visit the leaves of my water lilies. It looks like that pot is pretty crowded. LOL You're going to have to take a look at what's going on down under. If you can get a piece(s) of the stem with roots you should be able to separate them successfully. Another option, would be to take cuttings. I would give you more plants, too. Gail

If your tree was at my house I would say those pock marks on the branches were from a hail storm. I don't know if you get those in San Diego tho. Actually the tree looks like it could use some good fertilizer, but it's a really good size and it's blooming, so those are pluses. If you don't expect any freezes you could start by giving it some regular miracle gro just to nourish it and put some leaves on it. Once it has more growth, you can encourage it to bloom more with Bloom Plus or any fertilizer with higher middle number. Don't dig it up, it's not as bad as you think, just a little sparse.
