NYT story: Dead Roaches That Ate Moon Dust Went Up for Auction. Then NASA Objected.

Apparently roaches were fed moon dust in a 1969 experiment. They were recently up for auction as space memorabilia and the bidding had reached $40,000, when NASA intervened saying that they had rights to these roaches.

I am trying to imagine who would pay $40,000 for three roaches and exhibit them on some shelf in their home, no matter what the backstory might be.

Oh NO! That doesn't sound very funny to me. That sucks.Have you heard from Verizon yet? I hate calling them. I have wasted so many hours of my life on the phone with those guys. Leslie, my son was bitten by a tick last summer. It took them some time to figure it out. He was looked at by local doctors and of course this is Hicksville as far as healthcare. They finally sent him to one of the best hospitals in Missouri and he was diagnosed. By that time,the infection had eaten into the bones in his neck and he had to have surgery to clean that out,and they had to put plates in. He was very ill and nearly died. After he was sent home he was on an antibiotic drip twice a day for 6 weeks. It was a horrible time for all of us,and I still get shaky thinking how close to death he was. Those ticks can be dangerous!!!!

I have kind of a cute story. In 1982, I was a recent college-grad, newly moved to San Francisco, and during the Christmas season, I walked past the SPCA's adoption event on Market Street at lunchtime one day. I've always been a huge dog lover, and impulsively decided I wanted to buy all the dogs chews for Christmas, so I stopped for a few minutes to talk to the woman in charge to find out how many dogs there were in total, where I could drop the chews off, etc. We had a good 10-minute conversation. During our conversation, I was slightly aware of a youngish man standing off to the side of us, but Market St. is a busy street with lots of people around, so I didn't pay him much attention. Anyway, after I made a plan with the volunteer, I walked quickly away, because by now I was a bit delayed getting back to work after lunch. Half a block later or so, I suddenly, I felt a bit of a tug on my arm and turned to see the young man who had been listening to my conversation with the SPCA volunteer walking quickly as if to catch up with me. "Excuse me," he said, with a heavy Eastern European accent. "I sorry to be nosy -but I never see this before. You are buying shoes for all the dogs for Christmas?" It just cracked me up, to think of him sitting there thinking, "These crazy Americans, they buy shoes for their dogs!" I think I got him straight, but the funny thing is now, nearly forty years later, it wouldn't seem all that bizarre to buy shoes for dogs!

Well you can run up a $40,000 bar tab, or pay $100M for a painting, so I think $40K for a conversation piece is probably pretty cheap to people like that.

Does it say how the experiment turned out? I need to know what happens if one consumes moon dust.

I have bug collections. I also have a beautifully mounted American cockroach (a "roach " is a fish...or...).

I wouldn't pay for someone else's cockroach. The joy and the pride are in the hunt.

NYT: A few German cockroaches that had been fed the lunar diet ended up in the laboratory of Marion Brooks, an entomologist at the University of Minnesota. She found no evidence that the moon dust was toxic to the cockroaches, according to an article in The Star Tribune of Minneapolis from Oct. 6, 1969.

When the experiment ended, the professor brought the cockroaches and the contents of their stomachs back to her home, where she kept them until she died in 2007.
