I had the flashing problem with BM Muresco ceiling paint - don't know about their other "flat" paints but this is what my painter told me. We have BM Regal Matte on the walls, it doesn't seem to hold up to scrubbing w/o "burnishing" as well as CR suggested, but you can wipe stuff off. The darker colors (Antique Jade, Summer (blue)) seem to flash a bit too when touching up. But the Navajo White touches up very well. The Navajo White is kind of a ivory-bone, very neutral but a lot less yellow than the Filtered Sunlight I had originally considered (painted a sample) for my kitchen/family room (south and east windows made Sunlight look really yellow). I don't know that I'd want to use it on my ceilings though - depends on what your wall color is. If it's something from the same card, but darker, maybe, but I wouldn't use it with walls that were a totally different hue. Here's the east wall of my family room. They also look a little green (at least on my monitor) but it's not green at all. It's definitely not "white" though. The good thing is, it's a standard color so you can get a gallon and try a sample, if you don't like it you can return it.

I agree with dianalo. Although a really nice look for a backsplash, when I was looking three years ago, I was told it was on it's way out. I was warned against it too, because of the many variables. You don't know what the run will be when it is your turn to purchase. There was a particularly "muddy" run of Durango when I was shopping. Color wise, a brown can cast a pinkish hue to an entire backsplash. I have seen many backsplashes on this forum of TTT and they look great. But, I wasn't shopping where they shopped and wasn't getting what was up on their backsplashes. I decided on a ceramic crackle subway. This too might become dated. But after one backsplash mistake, I know that the backsplash can be removed and replaced if I feel the need to update in the future.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

I used an oil based wood stain in a walnut color to give new life to a travertine backsplash in a display vignette. It darkened it just enough to take away the pink tones, which are what usually clash with other natural stones. Whitewashing just makes those tones even pinker. Now this was a display and not an active kitchen, so I don’t know how it would wear being exposed to cleaning products. But, as porous as travertine is, if you stripped any sealer properly first with acetone, and then stained it, it would probably penetrate quite well.
