Thanks for clarifying the name to help the search. Yes, I’ve seen this product all over the place. It’s different. Sharing a close up. I’m looking for a product that is matte, flat, and has smaller grout lines.

Also, I am in Northern NJ if anyone has recommendations for tile shops in NJ, NY, or CT to check out.

I think you want to check out heritage tile and their subway ceramics and subway mosaics line etc. it appears to be flat and narrow grout lines. all handmade and made in the USA i believe. good luck!

Most 1” hex is sold mesh-mounted with 1/8” grout lines, but your installer can always set it with 1/16” grout lines—either buy it loose it or pull it off the mesh. It will cost more in labor since it is time-consuming, though. Heritage Tile might also sell it special order on mesh with the narrower grout lines. Daltile is a pretty good option for more affordable tile. Avoid Merola, which we tried to use for a recent project and found to be terrible quality. We used their 2” hex also and that was okay, but the 1” crumbled when cut and fell off the mesh; our tiler ultimately refused to continue with it so we switched to Aurora hex, which isn’t perfectly flat but was close enough for us and was much better quality per our tile guy. (Interestingly not more expensive for our project either since it is sold by the square foot vs. in 10 sf boxes! Wish we had used it for the 2” hex section too.)

@Mint tile Minneapolis do you know what the grout lines on theirs are? That looks the same as the 1/8"-mounted tiles we have but hard to tell from a photo! (Curious since we have another bathroom to do eventually and I'd like to do a mosaic pattern for that one.)

@artemis78 IIRC, American Restoration essentially is made to order, so whatever you need, they'll be able to make it happen.

If you're looking to match your 1920's tile/style, I'd avoid modern ceramic hex tile, which is still a bit pillowed, and go with a flat 1" unglazed porcelain hex. ClaySquared and the others already mentioned are all great upscale sources with a lot of customization options. The advantage of the porcelain is not just the authenticity and non-slipperiness, but the ability to get the occasional chip without overt failure because of the through-body color.

For simple vintage off-white, last year I purchased about 120 square feet of flat unglazed porcelain 1" hex for our 1910 bathroom floor from mosaictile.com and for what it's worth, can warmly recommend their customer service. The tile I got is mounted on mesh sheets with narrower 1/16" grout lines, and looks exactly like what you're seeking.*

They have 1", 1.5" and 2" hex, and they also offer a lot of pre-made floor mosaic designs that work well in vintage homes. I found them quite a bit cheaper than Clay2 etc but the quality is excellent and they are well-packaged. They have a few basic whites and grays and raven:

The mosaictile.com shop is physically located in Texas; if you're looking to shop around for deals on shipping etc, the 1" porcelain hex tile itself is made in Japan and distributed by American Universal Corp. Find them here: http://www.auc-tile.com/ (charmingly ancient site but great if you contact them directly; they sent me all the samples I wanted.) I used the TX source due to needing some specialized colors in 1" squares for the mosaics I designed myself, but would have also happily ordered from AUC directly. They re in Los Angeles, I believe.

Just let me know if you'd like a close-up snapshot of one of my sheets of these; I'm pretty sure I got the "ivory" color, which matches my 1922 Standard American white cast-iron bathtub and pedestal sink.

(One nice thing is, if these turn out to match, you can order just a sheet or two for your repairs.)

Great! I'm doing a vintage 3/4" square mosaic pattern around the borders, filled in with the hex, and this was the closest I could come to actual vintage flat rectified tile -- it's got the 1" across and 1 1/8" up-and-down, just like the originals -- with the surprise bonus of an affordable price. Plus you can order sheets of pre-made half-pieces, depending on what your design requires, in order not to do so much fiddly cutting on your straight edges.

Here's a quick shot of it, with a sheet of white printer paper on top for color comparison.

@loobab I've got mine laid out (scheduled for install in a few months) as a foot-wide mosaic in squares lining the edges and bath, a double-color dividing line, then the hex filling all in the center -- the very flatness and matte quality of this porcelain is really delightful, I think it will feel amazing under bare feet. It's just a different feel from the pillowed contemporary tile I'm used to -- almost a velvety quality.

And it fits very well into our historic home, so we're happy to keep up the tradition!
