We have a frameless shower enclosure for a neo-angle shower and I personally wouldn't recommend doing it. The new thin-line European-style framed enclosures are almost as good-looking, half the price, and won't leak. I disagree that your existing tile is 'classic'. I think it's low-end builder grade, and very tired looking. You need to be absolutely sure your tile guy is correct in thinking he can tile over the existing floor. Has he done a deflection test? If not, get thee over to the John Bridge forum where you can find out how to do one. Here's a suggestion you may not have thought of. Call a local bath reglazing vendor with good references, and price out what it would cost to have your wall tile repainted. I'd do them a beautiful, glossy, crisp white, then paint the walls a nice rich medium-dark brown or slate gray. It's usually inexpensive, and will make it a breeze to keep clean because the grout will be forever sealed. Keep the ceiling white (this keeps it from feeling like a cave) and if there isn't any crown molding, get some. A small bath like this needs some nice style touches to give it a more luxurious feel. I agree with replacing the toilet with a glossy white one. But I'd use one of those half-depth vanity cabs with the sink top, for storage and space-saving. I think I take the prize for having the smallest main bathroom! Our house was built in the 1800's so bathrooms were not an option... The upstairs bathroom has a big claw foot tub... but the tub is set under a slanted ceiling so you can't stand up in it and there is nowhere to move it so it is very INCONVENIENT! I guess I shouldn't complain because at least we have an upstairs bathroom to use in the middle of the night! So, because of this, the downstairs bathroom is our main bathroom. It is approximately 46" wide by 9' long. Just enough room for a toilet, small 18" vanity (the only counter space is the small area around the sink) and corner shower. A regular shower won't even fit. The only blessing that comes with it is when the pantry was converted to this bathroom, the PO built a shallow cupboard above the toilet! Give me enough room to store some towels, toiletries, etc. It is about 8" deep and 28" wide. It goes from just above the toilet to the ceiling. If you lean back too far while sitting, your hair can get caught in the handles :) I wonder if you couldn't do something like this to add some storage space--- Note the towel rack in the pictures... it gives you an idea on how small the bathroom really is.

Monica, that floor is gorgeous in her inspiration photo!! The tile showrooms (at least here in the Northeast) are all showing dozens of wood/tile varieties. I'm sure she could find several wide pine options like her Photo. I would do real wood anywhere except a bathroom. I was afraid of the moisture on it. Have her post updates here! Farmhouse coastal is a gorgeous look. I redid my kitchen 3 years ago with New England coastal theme and still love it as much as I did on day 1! Last night, I took my first bath in the new bathroom and love the tub and how deep it is. Haven't tried the handheld yet...

I know a bit about EPA and it’s just that I was sceptical that they would have put in place a rule preventing people from refinishing their bathtubs. I looked into this a little more and think I found what you may have been referring to. OSHA has safety requirements to protect people who work with methylene chloride, a hazardous solvent that is used often in bathtub refinishing. There is no prohibition of its use, but there is a requirement that employers protect worker health, and have outside exhaust equipment to bring to a home job site if the tub is being done in place. I suppose some companies may not have wanted to spend money to provide for such protection, so it might be a little harder to find a refinisher, but one can still get this done. In any case, since the chemical does not end up in the new finish, there’s no threat to the consumer who has a bathtub refinished this way.
