Need advice from a stripper :)

This little plant stand belonged to my grandfather, so I'd like to clean it up. It's very heavy -- the stand itself is wrought iron, and the 'floral' applique and fluted saucers feel like some kind of metal. The paint looks like it was a sprayed on enamel. I have a gallon of 'soy gel' and wonder if the experienced strippers out there can tell me if it's a good or horrible idea to use soy gel on this plant stand. lol!

eta, if a bad idea, then should I just scrape whatever is loose and repaint it?

You could also get a wire brush and clean away all the rust— which is your problem, not the paint. Knock off the paint in the rudting areas and scrub with the wire brush until the metal is clean Paint the bare metal with red lead or whatever it is cslled today—- a coating for bare metal to stop the oxidizing process. When you have cleaned all the areas of rust and treated them with two coats of rednlead you can then paint the entire piece whatever color you want.

If your intention is to strip off the paint and leave the iron au naturel it will continue to rust, more quickly outside than inside.

Agree with kswl … that’s exactly how I deal with rusty iron.

OMG...this is VERY difficult. I don't know how you (and all the others) did it. I've realized I'm covering way too much surface and need to go much, much smaller. Of course, after I applied PA7 to another large space that I get to remove today. Yaay. So far, The Green Monster is winning this war. I can't seem to rinse off the brick well enough to remove all the PA7 and the paint residue. How did you rinse off the brick well enough and not create a huge puddle on the floor? Did you find any specific brushes/tools to be most beneficial? I've noticed the grout is soft and I have to not use any metal/wire brushes. Nylon only. I'd love any suggestions/advice as to techniques that worked for you. I'm going thru nylon brushes like M&Ms. Just how long did this take you from start to finish? Five years? Eight? I don't know if I can do this...it feels daunting. I'm not sure PeelAway7 is the right product for this. Take a look at the pics below. Fireplace with first coat of PA7: After...still needs more scrubbing and rinsing (w/out flash). This is after 3hrs of scrubbing and 2 coats (two 24hr segments) of PA7. Same w/flash: Got ambitious before I knew what I was in for. I get to remove this section today.

Old thread resurrection...but wanted to share my experience. Have a fir deck, about 20 years old with old weathered Fenoseal oil finish. I replaced a number of boards and tried to lighten with Behr 2 in 1. It was somewhat effective, then powerwashed. My new wood was still much lighter. I had a grease stain which I cleaned with TSP, and saw that much gunk was coming off the boards leading me to suspect finish remained on the old boards. So I bit the bullet and bought Behr stripper-no local stores were open for any other brands. It removed tons of dark brown sludge but left all the wood dark with scubbing with a deck brush. Powerwashed it off too. I then went back over with some lightener by Cabot. All the wood is clean and bright. Granted the new wood has less texture but the color is close.

A good example of why you don't buy a house with zero setback on one side. Some basic info adding on to what Suzi said above. Stucco walls are only resistant to water. If there is no eaves protecting them from rainfall or if there are winds causing rain to hit them, they can get fairly wet inside. They have a space behind the stucco and any water that penetrates flows down the inside and out the weep screed. Soil needs to be 4" below that and the ground needs to slope away from the house at 5% minimum. 2% is allowed for a hard surface. If the project had a geotechnical report, it could make additional requirements. I guess that is a long preamble for my next statement, which is that the weep screed is there to get water out of the wall from rain and maybe some spray from watering - not drip watering. His ground level better NOT be higher than your cement slab. Clearly, there can NEVER be standing water above your slab level. He is totally wrong about his liability based upon what we see in your information, limited as it may be. Even without the zero lot line variable, it is routine large damage payments for excess watering, sprinkler leaks, or changes in grade drainage issues causing problems for downhill lots. Also, do your eaves hang over into his property? Are you in a HOA? Edited to add: I noticed this in a forum dedicated to old houses. Stucco houses built before about 1980 or so probably don't have a weep screed at all. Is this an "old" house, whatever that means.

Unless you attend to the rust, it will break through anything you use to paint over. I've never tried the stripper you have but since you already have it it's worth a shot The worst that could happen is that it's not strong enough to break the enamel bonds. Then you'd have to see if you can find something stronger but strippers with methylene chloride are being phased out. Once the paint is off you need a wire brush to scrub away all the loose rust, then prime with a Rust oleum product for metal before painting. It should be lovely when you're done - please share.

Wire brush to get chunks off. Strip. Paint with anti-rust paint. Then final coat paint.

Please, wear safety glasses and an N95 mask (respirator). What others said about the rust.

It sounds like this nice plant stand holds a lot of meaning for you. You might want to explore getting it ”sand blasted” (other materials can be used) and maybe ”powder coat“ painted. Sand blasting the old paint and rust would be fast and effective. An auto body shop might be able to help you. Good luck.

Good advice from Petalique. I found a old rusty milk can, with an old farm name on it. I loved the piece enough I paid to have an auto body shop sandblast and finish painting it. I don't remember it being very much and my beloved milk can is still going strong 20 years later. It's not outside either though.

Years ago we had several pieces of old rusty iron sandblasted at the auto body shop. It was definitely worth the money since two of them had ornate detail that would have been difficult to brush.

A friend gave me one that is painted a soft sage-pistachio green (not super new paint). It is inside.
