Idea to solve my path dilemma
Comments (2)Aline, thanks for the kind words! I don't know how deep it HAS to be, I think some people do 4" thick edging. In my soil you can't really dig a 5" trench, many of the stones you dig out are 5" across or more, the scale has to be bigger to achieve any uniformity. Also, they end up wider than deep, if you try to go straight down the edges cave in. 30" would be a pretty wide trench here, and an absolute beast to dig! For another, shorter path with steps I'm doing in stone and concrete, I'm not going down more than 5" or so. The things in the back are old Papasan chairs, seats upside down....See Moresolving bathroom cabinet dilemma

Comments (8)If using the tiny Christmas type gold string lights, just wrap them around the pillar on the way up, and add a string to wrap down a corresponding pillar to make it look even. I know, far from perfect, but ... If using the heavy-duty café lights, tape or carefully staple the cord in a very straight, flat line going up the column. Or if that looks too tacky, just learn to live with the cord. Life comes with cords... (sigh). Another thought -- use lights that have batteries as a power source, or solar lights. I used solar lights on my deck and they work surprisingly well. The brand is Gama Sonic and some models have as much as 130 lumens output....See MoreHow do I solve this tile dilemma?
Comments (4)Interesting tile layout with the black (slate?), gray, and blue mosaic. So you want to transition to beige tile, eh? That's a stark transition, so in the absence of any other info, I would say, since you can't fight the abruptness of change in color and pattern, you embrace it instead. Get a third tile (or combo of tiles) and, assuming you have a clear demarcation in your architecture such as an archway, make a visual threshold there with that 3rd tile. It will be a bold announcement of a flooring change and make both main flooring choices look deliberate. The 3rd tile should be chosen in color, shape, format, texture, and gloss to relate to both of the 2 main choices....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
