corner fireplace in large living room. How to furnish?
Comments (4)That sounds just like our family room in size, shape, and corner fireplace (which was a real challenge for me to figure out and in the end I needed a decorator to do it.) Here's how our designer arranged it (and by the way, he said to have a huge area rug positioned just as you have yours): Going around the room, starting with the long wall directly to the left of the fireplace wall: Wall to left of fireplace: A pair of wingback chairs and ottomans with a round tea table between chairs. These are angled toward each other of course but they back to the wall. So, pretty much, they are ignoring the fireplace. Corner fireplace. Wall to right of fireplace: TV cabinet (or, your piano). This wall has an exit to the foyer, so the next grouping of furniture begins several feet inward from it. Long wall to right of TV cabinet wall and opening to foyer: Sofa, flanked by a large trunk on the left side and an end table on the right side, and of course a coffee table. On the left end of the sofa, at a right angle to the sofa, a small occasional chair. So sofa and occasional chair "share" the trunk as an end table. Wall to right of that (which is basically mostly opening into the kitchen but has some small wall area: Another wingback chair at a right angle to the sofa. So sofa and wingback share the end table. Right now all the furniture is either being made or recovered or in the garage, as floors were just redone and we're painting etc., but prior to that I had it arranged this way with existing/old furniture, and it really looked good. I thought I wouldn't like ignoring the fireplace by not having furniture directly centered on it, but really it does not feel like it's being ignored. Have to find the area rug now but need to cool it on the money expenditures for a bit. Hope this helps!...See MoreNarrow living room w/Corner Fireplace. Furniture help ;)

Comments (14)Before you can decide on seating you need to design based on a balance of what you need every day, what you need when you have guests, how often you need the additional seating and the activities that will be done when you need the additional seating. Example: Typically I have 2 people watching TV or playing board games in the evening. About once every two weeks I have 4 people. A 5 person sectional with an additional chair works for both board games or TV. About once every 2 months I will host dinner for my siblings and spouses - then I have 10 people, but the girls usually hang in the kitchen, dining room and the guys go watch TV. Still works. About once a year I have the whole family over for some kind of function. That will be 30 people. I didn't plan my seating for 30. I have a couple of rooms that have seating and we end up a bit scattered. I have enough seating if people use the livingroom, dining room, sitting room and I pull extra chairs that I have in the bedrooms and store in the basement. We just kind of muddle through. In the two years that I have lived here I have not once needed more than 6 seats for watching a movie. My sister entertains a lot and has a large number of guests at one time on a regular basis. She has a great room with a dining table that seats 12, bench seating under her window wall that butts against her corner fireplace, a 4 person couch with a chaise plus 3 recliners and another small bench that she will place in front of the fireplace and an ottoman that can go in front of the TV for addional seating. She also has several shallow boxes that fit over her TV so that it looks like wall art instead of a TV. Knowling your needs really helps define the amount and type of seating you need....See MoreLiving Room with Corner Fireplace
Comments (2)This is for sure the TV room? There is so much light in here that I fear for glare for you. It's not all that uncommon to mount a TV above the fireplace, though ideally it should be lower to avoid neck strain. I think putting on the wall to the right of the fireplace might look a little unbalanced, but at least you could place it lower. I might explore other options for a darker TV room....See MorePam
