Remodeling Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Is this acceptable from a professional tile setter?

My mother is having her bathroom remodeled and she just came home to her newly tiled shower. The pattern is relatively even at the base of the shower but as you go up the wall it gets further and further off until it is about 2-3inches off at the top.

Is this a reasonable thing to not be pleased with? And any ideas why this happened?

Post a pic of the whole shower but usually when his happens it is because the walls are not plumb and the tile setter did not reaize that before tiling began I am not sure the reason for this layout at all so I need to see the whole shower.

It's not the tile setter. The shower appears to not be square. Large-scale patterns on walls when the walls are not square are a disaster.

Corners not meeting correctly are often easier to hide with a small scale pattern.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Do you mean he should have used a vapor barrier behind the Fiberock? yes. Is this in a code somewhere? It is hard to find the codes on-line without paying for them. yes. As well as in the TCNA Handbook, it will also be found in the ANSI standards (American National Standards Institute-- the book that governs ALL phases of building). It'll be found somewhere either in ANSI 108 or ANSI 118, not sure which one, but if you can't find someone local to look it up for you, I'll dig and find the exact spec. And since he didn't use a vapor barrier, is the only solution now to apply the liquid waterproofing? Either that, or take the fiberrock back down and put up the vapor barrier. Oh, and does UPC 417.4.1 not apply? Not sure what 417.4.1 is. As for Bill's link to Noble Company and preslope codes, that's 412.8 in the UPC code.

Hi Breezy - I though about including some pics but thought it wouldn't show any more than the words. If you click on this you can see the actual tape-placement with the measurement, but neu? The passthrough edge got sandwiched because we ran out of material; the rest is mitred. The bag is walnuts, not a blemish in the stone! It's a little greener IRL - so hard to capture polished rock on "film". The booboo at the passthrough is something I've been ruing more and more lately. The casing around our windows is so thick (3.5") that by the time you add extra for overhang there is a 5" lip beyond the opening and all that 10" made it too big to slip through the opening. They proposed to solve the problem by cutting out a little more on both ends that would be covered up by the face board .... only *huh?* - instead of spreading the extra space over both edges they took it from one alone leaving 3/4" to cover with a faceboard rather than 3/8". So irritating. Not what we'd discussed.... Anyway... If you click on the pictures you might find other photos on photobucket with better pictures of the granite. It's very hard to capture.

Dragonfly....it's nothing like some of the free hand mosiacs YOU do....lovely I might add.....but this is what my friends wanted. And how much grout to leave when hitting the corner edge was a judgement call. :0)

Quite honestly, you have more problems there than the broken tiles. The install is not good at all. Spacing is uneven. it looks really bad. Have you been watching him and taking pictures? Did he even waterproof underneath? This in my opinion should be all torn off, and completely redone, with a tile person that actually knows how to tile.

I can think of two scenarios that would cause this. If the walls are crooked or out of plumb it would be on the contractor for not addressing prior to tile. Alternatively he doesn't have the pattern level at which point it would fall on the tiler. Go to the store and buy a 3' level- check the walls and the pattern to see which was off.

Answer is no, it was not a professional install. An actual pro checks day one, minute one, for plumb and level. That is the responsbility of the tile contractor. If they are not plumb and level, then it is discussed with the client so they understand the incremental charges to correct the framing. If a GC is involved, the tile contrator refers to the GC to determine who makes the corrections. Under NO circumstances should a professional "not realize" the framing is not tile ready. Size of tile shouldn't matter for a Pro either. These are industry standards.
