Dead corners-accessing space from another room
Comments (17)My parent's house had an amazing amount of wasted space in the laundry room where laundry, bath, and hall cabinets had been sheetrocked in. They all backed onto a dead space that was about 3x3. (not counting the cabinets). The bath had about 6 feet of cabinetry. We removed the laundry cabinet and the partition it was in, took out the hall cabinet entirely, and removed the box part of the bath cabinets, leaving their doors and facings so they opened directly into the laundry room. Then we sheetrocked over most of the bath/laundry wall, and installed extremely shallow shelving on the bath side, between the studs and behind the original doors. Just big enough for a 4 or 6-pack of toilet paper, or shampoo stocks. One bath cabinet remained open to the laundry, with its shelves in the laundry. Towels for that bath went straight to the shelves. :) Then we rigged a sliding "barn door" (this was late 1960s, before barn doors were trendy) for better access, and put adjustable shelving all around the new U-shaped pantry space. It turned into a 4x6 pantry area and was far more useful....See MoreNeed advice on living room arrangement - corner fireplace & huge wall
Comments (14)A 55" TV is only about 48" wide. I really think the sofa should go on the wall and the TV should go above the fireplace. Otherwise, you have to choose between awkward TV viewing or an awkward sofa location. eta: I just read that you never use the fireplace. You could put the TV on a console in front of the fireplace (gasp) I know. But I think you could make it work if none of the fireplace was visible....See MoreIdeas for a big "dead" corner in small living room
Comments (14)I can't help but notice the following: The square tiles and a border at the entrance door are kind of odd. Why not just replace them with the same flooring just like that of the bigger part of the room? If the middle of the art works are at most's eye level and they take up about 2/3 of the width of the sofa, then they should be fine. I would like to see the window with a floor to ceiling cream sheer curtain to brighten up the room. A palm plant at the very corner. A wooden brown solid round table with height higher than the arm rest of the sofas. A table lamp with round cover. Cream fabric seat covers for both sofas....See MoreDead spaces in living room and kitchen
Comments (4)Your first photo shows litter boxes placed below an electric piano. If the piano is so seldom used that you can keep litter boxes below it, pack it up—store it or sell it. Put a room divider SCREEN in front of the litter boxes if they have to remain here. However, it is much better to put such things as far as possible from where people gather. These should not be visible from the front door! Nothing should go in the open space of the 2nd photo. It's the entry to your living area and needs to be at least 36" wide, though 42" is preferred. Not every open spot is wasted space. In the 4th photo there is a door on the right wall between the counter and the railing. The space in front of it is pathway that must stay open. You have to allow space behind a door for it to open properly. As to the rest of the photos, I do not understand most of the scribbles. Also, the photos are too narrow and too dark to see the rooms. Turn on all the lights in a room. Bring in a portable FLOOD LIGHT if necessary. Take a photo from each corner standing against the wall. Outside light is less glaring if the day is overcast, so won't wash out the interior when taking photos towards a window. You can solve some of your storage problem by going through your cabinets. Get rid of anything broken. Give to charity anything that you do not use. This means extra vegetable peelers to plastic storage containers to pots and pans. If something has sentimental value it should be stored with similar items where it can be seen. Do you have a section of wall where you could put a kitchen cart? If your kitchen is wide enough you can put a small one in the center like an ISLAND. Storage caddies can go on the inside of a closet DOOR or CABINET. There are pull out RACKS for baking pans and cutting boards. Do an online search for kitchen storage. There is a wealth of products....See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
