It's an ownroot from Ashdown, that's why I'm a little surprised that it doesn't seem to be more vigorous then it is. I know it takes at least the first 3 years to see some more growth, but I wonder sometimes about whether I actually have William Baffin! When he blooms soon I'll take a pic or two. Maybe I'm just being impatient again? He was only planted last year afterall. But, I wonder because even my Westerland has lots more growth on and that was planted only a week earlier than WB. My Westerland though was purchased at Heirloom roses.

I often prune my William Baffin in July, after the big bloom, even though I do most of my other roses in April. We've taken as much as a trailer load of wood off it - it should do just fine. I make sure I water it well after the pruning. Here he is before pruning:

William Baffin will easily spread 10+ feet in either direction. That's 20+ feet of fence covered if planted in the mddle of it. WB is a huge climber. I had to remove one years ago because I did not expect it to get far too large for the space it was allotted. I believe the single William Baffin you have will cover the length of fence in your photo very satisfactorily. Planting a WB on either side may prove to be too much William Baffin. They will definitely grow into and across the center of your existing one. You could, on the other hand, plant just one additional William Baffin at the end of the fence where your shed butts it. Then you could train canes up the shed and over its front as well as onto the fence all the way to your existing WB. The existing WB would then be trained to its right only, no canes trained to its left. In spite of WB's great size, as is typical of most climbers, it will take a couple more years to reach its full potential when compared to the typical non-climbing rose. Climbers mature slowly in most cases, but they do eventually get there.

I hope my monster William Baffin won't give you any bad dreams. It's controllable if you cut it back. I haven't cut mine back for a few years, and I have a good reason. I had a wonderful couple as my backyard neighbors for years, they loved William Baffin (8-9 years old), they started taking their family annual photos in front of 1 William Baffin in the spring a few years ago, I thought I'd keep that one big and tall for their photos, and for the garden balance reason, I let the other ones grew into the same size. The lady passed last summer, her husband moved to a nursing home, the house has been sold. I really missed them.....this year I will cut them back to 7-8' tall after their spring show.
