not a bad first season, planning ahead for second season
Comments (1)Seed catalogs come out around December/January, so that's the time to order seeds. You can make a wish list before then and also write down what you already have. For me, I like to shop in the stores, too, so I buy some off the rack in late winter. Ah, springtime......See More'First Ghost' Maple Seedling
Comments (1)You won't find seedlings but you can find small grafted starts - ForestFarms, Bloomriver and a few other mail order sources offer it. If you are interested in maples that have "ghost" as part of their name, there is an entire 'Ghost' series of Japanese maples developed by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Oregon -- 'Amber Ghost', 'Sister Ghost', 'New Ghost', 'Purple Ghost', 'Ghost Dancer', etc. All are reticulated sports and feature delicate veined, patterned foliage. I grew 'Ghost Dancer' in my old garden and it truly was a stunning plant. These all need protection from afternoon sun, even in my mild climate. FWIW, named forms of JM's are never seedlings and these are notoriously tricky to grow from cuttings, so looking for small grafted plants may be your best bet....See Morecan I re-pot a ghost pepper during growing season?
Comments (6)Yes, I would try to repot during the cool evening hours but probably not critical. It sounds like you are using about a 2-3 gallon pot now and I would go up to at least a 5 gallon. 14-16" at the top. I use 5 gallon pails for most of my peppers. I would not disturb the root ball too much in hopes of lessening the transplant shock unless it is severely root bound, then you will want to spread it out a bit as the will have trained themselves to grow inside that area and will have trouble breaking out even after transplanting. You might want to keep it in the shade for a day or so if the sun is hot and intense right now. It might slow progress for a while, but the summer is still young and once it rebounds, it will go fast. Bruce...See MoreFirst Ghost Pepper of the season.
Comments (11)Thanks for the link John. This was my first year growing ghost peppers, and I now realize this plant is not what is was labeled at the nursery. I do have some chocolate ghosts that do display the proper shape, size, and skin texture. No comparison between the two. I'm not completely sold on the thought it is a Trinidad Scorpion, though. I've grown these in previous years and mine all had a very bumpy skin texture. These are almost smooth. They also don't display the "stinger" shape that gave the Scorpion its name. I'm inclined to agree with one of the earlier posters that it is a habanero or hybrid. I have a Caribbean Red, with a few pods getting ready to ripen. I'll post a side by side shot when they do, as I think these two plants are one in the same. Whatever it turns out to be, the recipients of the peppers I grow will still be happy. Most of my garden harvest goes to a church run food bank, but the super hots go to a relative of a work associate that makes one mean hot sauce with them. He usually reciprocates by sending me back at least one small bottle of the sauce. I won't be able to try it this year, but hoping to do so next season....See Moregreenman28 NorCal 7b/8a
