Beautiful, friendly dogs, but a dog that has a tendency to take off is not for me. Nor is a big drooler. And I prefer something with a longer lifespan.

Stayed up to watch the show to the end. I liked the bloodhound all along. The BOS judge sure milked it. He was in his element and basking in the glow.

Ive only seen a bloodhound as a pet once. They are huge, shed a lot and drool. I think you must take special care of their skin in the folds. You must be a very dedicated owner to have one and live far from neighbors who may not enjoy their baying. They seem like gentle giants.

That clip reminded me, when I went to see A Mighty Wind (same creative team as above movie) I was one of 2?3? people in the theater. A much older gentleman enters, walks right up to my row (I’m thinking Dude, there are plenty of empty rows, move along!), comes up to me and asks ”what’s this movie about?” I gave him an annoyed look (which he might have missed in the dark 😠) and replied ”folk music.” He said “you’ve got to be kidding me!” and left. 😆

And yes, I've read about how much bloodhounds drool - which makes me think of another movie centered around a big drool-y dog - Turner & Hooch.

Making Best in Show, Christopher Guest shadowed our handler to learn about shows. Bruce was showing bloodhounds at the time, and Guest really must have been impressed. We love that movie and we 'know' every single character in the movie. Every one.

Not a fan of bloodhounds or any other dogs that have droopy red eyes or sloppy drooly jowls (no offense to people who are fond of them). I love dogs, but these types of breeds kind of gross me out.

I also love "Best in Show"! Unfortunately I think there are far too many people out there who get into owning a dog without really doing the research. Whether it's understanding the needs of dogs in general, or especially breed-specific needs, sometimes people just adopt without thinking. I would love to pet and snuggle a bloodhound, but not own. I find it incredibly sad that so many people spontaneously got puppies in the first year of the pandemic and surrendered them when they realized they couldn't manage having a dog. I know my local news ran some articles about it. I don't know if Westminster show is the most influencial, though I'm sure it does influence some people My uneducated guess is that movies about dogs have far more impact on people spontaneously choosing breeds that they are ill-equipped to manage. Most recently I'm thinking about the movie "Dog" with a Belgian Malinois.

Any hunting dog that wins is fine by me! They do take off but that's why they need a super large fenced in area. Very large. :)

Prickly, remember all the people who ran out and bought Dalmatians after the 101 Dalmatians movie? How that irked me. All those new owners were in for a big surprise. lol. I pity the dogs though, I think a lot were up for adoption afterwards.

I'm sure Bloodhounds are beautiful to their owners. But just looking at those eyes makes my contact lenses hurt.

I watched the show and was rooting for the terrier to win. But at the same time as they were going through the descriptions of each breed, and the original reasons and purpose for which the breed was developed, for which the various traits the judge was looking for and judging as to determine how closely the dog is to the Platonic ideal as embodied in the "breed standard", I could help thinking that while the standard was initially developed as a guide for breeders to produce a dog suited for the desired purpose, in many (most?) cases that suitability for a purpose is long since gone. Instead many breed standards have become ever more extreme, so much so that some individual dogs that are perfect exemplars of the standard are not able to perform the tasks the breed was originally bred for.

They kept describing how this feature would protect the dogs eyes as it ran through the brush while hunting, or this one would keep the dog warm while swimming after game, or this one made it so the dog could follow a quarry down a hole, and it seemed obvious to me that the coifed and pampered dogs being exhibited had never actually performed the task for which their breed was originally intended.

Moreover, while I can see that it is possible to evaluate a number of dogs of a given breed to determine which most closely hews to the "standard" the notion that you could then decide whether the best of breed golden retriever is closer to its standard than the best of breed labrador retriever is to its standard, or the best in class blood hound is closer to its standard than the best in class samoyed is to its standard has always seemed ludicrous to me.
