My Rant for the Day

I'm feeling angry and discouraged this morning. First I worked a long time last night on a seedling post that has totally disappeared. Houzz!!! Bah!!!

The gardens this morning were so disappointing. I should have reached peak by now, and my seedlings and the newer plantings I've been watering did. But many of my mids, MLs and even a few earlies have not started blooming yet. Their foliage is yellowing and dying in the extreme heat and drought conditions. On the ones with most of the foliage dying, I'm goiing to cut the scapes off to prevent extreme stress and possible death of the plants. This is as bad as I've ever seen garden conditions folks.

On plants that are faring better, the blooms are faded and very, very small. Six inch flowers are in the three inch range, and some five-inch flowers are blooming at 2.5-3 inches.

So don't expect me to be posting every day. I could only find five daylilies worth photographing this morning. At that rate, I would think I would do only one, perhaps two posts a week. There will be no future glorious garden shots, or pictures of amazing clumps from me - at least for awhile. We have a 58 percent chance of getting some rain on Sunday. I'm praying it happens.

I'm so sorry to hear that. There is so many variables in gardening that some years I've been fed up too. And to have to fight houzz too...definitely GRRRRRRRRRR. Praying for rain.

Debra, I really feel your pain, still teetering on the edge here. We work so hard to make things nice and create beauty and mother nature throws her curve ball. Just hoping for rain for us all and watering when I can. I couldnt get myself out to water in that heat and humidity. I am still hoping to see some beauties from your garden in the future, I so looked forward to seeing what you created. Bring on the rain!

I have fine hair, but a lot of it. Just enough wave so it won't do straight styles, but not enough to give body to any sort of wavy style. And several cowlicks that make things even more interesting. My problem is that I want a style I can deal with at home and still have my hair look okay. I end up with a good cut, but I can't style it at home the way they do in the salon, so I have lackluster hair all the time. The stylists tease it--I simply cannot figure out how to do this and not have my hair look like a bird's nest. They manage to get lift into my hair that lasts all day; I can get lift that lasts for half an hour or until I go outdoors and encounter a mild breeze. But when you go in and say, I want a style that works with thin, fine hair all the time, and doesn't need a ton of product or more than 10 minutes of styling a day, they promise that, but they deliver the exact opposite. I keep reading articles that talk about working with the hair you have, but the stylists clearly are reading something different.

Nice! I don't give cash... in fact, I usually give personalized gifts that can't be returned. I know many won't agree but when you give a gift, it should be from the heart & the receiver should appreciate that. I think it's insulting to the gift giver when something is returned. The only time I think it's fine to take something back... if it doesn't fit but it should be exchanged for the right size. I will now be climbing down off my soapbox, since that isn't the purpose of this post. (sorry pseudo, that's just one of my pet peeves) But seriously, I hope it wasn't your DH giving them cash. I know that once a gift is given, what they do with it is their business but that is pretty low... to not celebrate Christmas but take what the kids get & use it for herself. If she doesn't celebrate Christmas, what kind of "gifts" is she supposedly going to get them in January? That is so low! And I was gonna complain because BM asked DH for a favor & he accommodated but when he asked for a favor, she said no. But, this one takes the Christmas Grinch trophy.

I lost 40 pounds since July and having fun buying all new clothes. I don't care that I'm wearing jeans from stores that teens and young adults shop in. The only problem I have is the mid-rise jeans are not mid-rise anymore. They're low rise. I simply wear a belt and bought a lot of tunic style tops. Maybe you need to be fitted properly for a bra. I have to buy mine online (www.figleaves.com). I went into Victorias Secret yesterday to buy a convertible bra so I can wear tops with spaghetti straps this summer. The girl measure me the strangest way! Across my back, then up over top of my boobs for the band size! Then she did the fullest part and concluded my bra size. I took the bra she chose and knew before I even tried it on there was so way it would fit. I ended up buying my bra online. I'll have it in 3 weeks..... I used to buy a lot of clothes at Sears too. But I found when I went there to buy a dress to wear to our company Christmas dinner most of the clothes they carry now, my grandmother would not have worn. Their styles are so outdated and ugly. I ended up buying my dress at Le Chateau, which when they first opened, I called: Le Shat-ho.Most of the clothing they used to carry I only pictured hookers wearing. They've changed a lot. I've bought five new pairs of jeans in the past 3 weeks. 1 pair of Guess Jeans. 1 pair of Brody jeans, 1 pair of store brand (Bootlegger) jeans, and 2 pair of Silver jeans. I LOVE the Silver jeans. They're from a Canadian based company (Winnipeg) and the material is thicker. They're stone washed and extremely comfortable. I used to buy my jeans at a western wear store. My favourites for years were Aura jeans by Wranglers. But they don't make my style anymore and the jeans they do make have so much bling on the back pockets, and I don't need people staring at my butt. ;) The only problem I'm having is buying a pair of knee high dress boots. My calves are 16" around and most boots are 14" - 15". I've about given up. I did buy one pair of ankle boots that I love. Maybe I'll just find another pair with a bit of a heal on them and give in to defeat. Or defeet..... ;)

Response: I think that is what most Americans are afraid of in going single-pay, is that, the lack of physicians would probably be a big problem for us. Americans are used to the best care around, and we may lose that if we go single-pay, which I am definitely a fan of instead of ACA for sure. There is already a problem in the US finding specialists in rural areas. There has been for decades. And I'm not talking just about just pediatric cardiologists, or endocrinologists -- I'm talking about basic OB/GYN services, radiologists, etc. these underserved areas will remain underserved for some time, even under single payer. It will take a while for the new equilibrium to settle in -- new earnings expectations for physicians, etc. -- and there will definitely be growing pains. Growing pains can mean scarcities in areas that haven't experienced them before. But it wouldn't be the end of the world.

I think the topper of it all is that Houzz dropped all your hard work. We all know that the heat will end at some point, but will Houzz ever be reliable?...............I'm so sorry about the shape of your daylilies. Even though I water all my pots every single day, I still see some of the leaves are experiencing heat stress. The forecast for a brief reprieve from triple digit temperatures on Sunday/Monday, is welcome news, but we have no rain in our forecast and it will still be hot enough that I won't be able to skip watering. I'll rant with you..................Maryl

Yeah, Houzz is a pain. I dumped my cookies and something else. Seemed to speed things up else where. I still can't get pictures in my post, have to do it in comments. I am seeing some bud drop here. I had to dig 2 daylilies planted in spring and 1 that had been struggling that have a bit of crown rot. The 2 new ones I am pretty sure can be saved, whether i can manage is the ? Allegheny Skyline may bite the dust. I am not good at rescuing rot victims. I have a few others foliage is yellowing. Most plants look surprisingly good though, and I am seeing a few rebloom scapes. I agree though, seems like later bloomers are slowing down. Sorry about the frustration though, and Houzz does not help!

Well, I was going to post a picture of our dry grass, but Houzz won't do it. I haven't been having any problems, but I guess the problem is spreading.

Conditions are the same here. The foliage on so many daylilies looks just terrible. Bloom colors are off and flowers are small. That is even with watering almost twenty four hours a day. Bob has been turning off the sprinklers early in the morning (they have been running all night) so that we can look at flowers and perhaps hybridize and then he turns them back on after lunch. There are three running right now. Luckily for us, we are on a well and have good well water where we are. We have a 50% chance of rain on Sunday. Also, someday, we need to get 1200 seedlings planted. This is the worse season I have seen since 2011 when we had major heat and no rain.

Nan - OMG, I can't believe how brown your grass is! It looks like someone sprayed Roundup on it. I have some very small patches of grass here and there that are starting to brown, but it's nothing like yours. I'm surprised your bloom colors are off and flowers are small when you've been using the sprinklers so much. That must be a disappointment.

Nancy - It's so weird that Houzz won't let you post photos until the comments. I know you've been frustrated by that. Sorry about your crown rot.

Maryl - The heat has been even worse for you than me. Watering all those pots daily must be a pain. I still have about 20 in pots that I've been watering daily, along with my seedling beds and my newer planting areas. I'm glad I have soaker hoses in two of my gardens. Plants in those are doing fine. We are supposed to get some cooler days on Monday and Tuesday.

Sherry - I hope we both get rain soon.

Brad - I haven't had any problems this year with Houzz until that post last night. I guess there was some word in it that caused its algorithm to hold it. I'm waiting to see if it shows up in the next 24 hours. If it doesn't, I'll repost it.

Debra, I am so sorry. The heat is supposed to be a bit better next week and better chances of rain.. It is 95 here with 103 heat index, but I got rained on fifteen miles away at Walmart. Not here though.

Kay - I am looking forward to temps in the high 80s for Monday and Tuesday. But it will be a brief respite.

The heat takes its toll quickly, even with watering. I am noticing that in daylilies that are potted. What will July bring?
