Yes, so often! I remember dreams from years ago where I dreamed a sound that disturbed me, before I just accepted that I hear things that aren't there.

Yes. Sometimes outside sounds work their way into my dreams before I wake up. Other times I dream I hear sounds that wake me up, but all is quiet.

The main sounds I have in my dreams are of people talking, but I also have dreams with music in them.

Last night I dreamed I was playing the recorder, and I was at a music store that had a lot of recorders for sale. I wanted to buy a soprano recorder, and someone at the store played it for me so that I could hear how it sounded. Then I played it as well. Oddly enough, some of the recorders were made of clay instead of wood.

I've had other dreams with flute music and pianos. It seems that I can compose music in my sleep, but I don't remember it that well after I wake up.

Lars composes music in his dreams. I’ve written some blockbuster novels in mine! My novels have never gotten further than my dreams and I cannot recall much about them when I wake up.

To stay on topic, I do hear sounds in my dreams. Like others, sometimes they are real sounds that get incorporated into a dream and other times they are not real. And yes, I’ve heard my phone ding and nothing was there. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it ring, though.

Every time I dream there is sound. it never even occurred to me that some people dream silently.

Yes, always. I hear ringing phones, music, entire conversations, sounds of nature, as well.

That’s an interesting idea! I can follow conversations in my dreams, but actually hearing sound? That I do occasionally, usually I hear someone saying someone else’s name, and rather sharply. It is not part of a dream, and it wakes me up. Or I am starting to waike anywayat, and it is part of waking.

I dream isolated sounds which I think is the ask here. All sorts of pings and beeps, thumps. human voices in the distance and so on not related to my usual dream life. This happens as I rouse from sleep. My dreams are very real complete with appropriate background noises, sensations of breezes, wetness from water etc. and of course conversations. For most of my life I did not have taste in my dreams but over the past fifteen years or so I can taste things. The very first thing I tasted was a piece of crust off a loaf of bread. It was truly excellent bread. One of life's more frustrating experiences is reading a really good book that fades out at the most interesting point.

I once learned a tricky melodic figure in Handel's Messiah in my sleep. Went to bed tripping over it every time, woke up knowing it perfectly.

Though I don't generally have strong memories of sound in my dreams, I have woken up from dreams feeling like I'd just watched a really great movie, and it wasn't a silent movie.

I definitely get audio hypnagogic hallucinations (those not-quite-dreams when you are dozing off), like I'm overhearing snippets of conversation at a cocktail party. Sometimes I'll "overhear" something quite funny. Hard to believe it was just something my subconscious just randomly generated.

I have definitely heard ringing phones and loud bangs that were only in my sleep. They woke me up. Yes to conversations, too .

Do I ever! Not only sound....but color, different languages...they are like little novellas.

I've never understood how or why people would dream in black and white. Surely our ancestors wouldn't have had the concept of black and white, since the natural world is full of color.

I also have dreams in other languages, and not just the ones that I speak. Of course if I do not speak them, then I do not understand them either.

As for flavors, I often taste things in my dreams, and two days ago I dreamed I had a passion fruit and granola smoothie or drink. It was basically passion fruit juice that had been sweetened (and I could identify it by taste) that had balls of granola in it that I fished out and ate. The granola was crisp and not soggy. I often dream that I am cooking something.

I think that everyone dreams in color but that they remember it later in black and white, or else just forget what the colors were.

One of the things that is supposed to define dreams from life is the passage of time. I revisit places in my dreams or will dream about someplace that I know in my dream is near someplace I have been before. One of them is about a house I tried to purchase and couldn't because the heirs couldn't agree. Over the past thirty years or so it has become derelict. Very sad. I often dream about buying and renovating or just building. I revisit some of those but not to the detail of this dream.

Sometimes nightmares as Lars has can be dealt with by changing your attitude about having them. You can experience things in dreams you safely cant in waking life. So even if you wake up with your heart pounding you think-Oh WoW like having gone to a good movie. You were there and lived to tell the tale to anyone one who loves you enough to listen to you relate a dream. I would put a smiley emoji here if I knew how.

Yes. I have loud,vivid, weird dreams that I do not like. Like Alice In Wonderland gone psycho,in the worst way possible. I wish dreams were not a thing. I wish I could just sleep, and there would be nothing. Just black stillness, until I woke up. Its like when your trying to rest your body, you're mind has to act a fool. Its ironic to me that REM sleep, when we have our dreams, is the deepest, most physically restoring stage of sleep.

My latest dream had someone I know laughing magically while staring me straight in the eyes, for no reason. I wish I could not hear that creepy laugh.....

Yall did not hear me. Enjoy the scary scenario. This is a decision that the waken you can make. You, the awoken you can decide to enjoy the experiences of the dream you just had. In what other world could you safely drown. I have. I have fallen off of cliffs. I have jumped from a rocky Clift that would certainly lead to death in the waking world. Once you do this you are free to enjoy being chased by evil soldiers intent on your capture or any other permutation of scary scenario. It is amazing. Be afraid, very afraid, while you are asleep. Wake up and you have lived a life you would never be able to otherwise.

There is a big difference between scary nightmares and anxiety producing nightmares. It is much easier to put scary dreams out of one's mind because the fear is not real, but the anxiety producing dreams might be quite real, or at least much more difficult to put out of one's mind.

Fear never keeps me from going back to sleep, but anxiety does.

Lars, I understand that you are anxious but as hard as it is I do believe you can make a difference in your perceptions. I often wake with some sort of problem that I was supposed to solve in the dream. It can take some time for me to realize I do not have to solve this problem. I have had problems with dreaming panic attacks so I do not speak lightly about realigning yourself with your dreams. I only posit this as a possibility. Try. It cant hurt. I am sorry you have difficulties with your dream life. It makes me feel lucky that I came up with a management program when I was a child. You had a difficult childhood from what you have written but so did I. I wish you were as lucky as I was in finding a work around.

I'm on different medications now, and that has helped. I think the magnesium made the difference. A lot of people can do things with their will power that others cannot - we are all wired differently, and what works for one person may not work for another. My brother can direct his dreams, but I have tried and am unable.

I had worse dreams as a child, and I also had auditory hallucinations, but as a child, I thought they were real, and they were extremely terrifying. As a child, my bedroom had a fireplace, and I would hear voices from the fireplace talking about how they were going to kill me, and so I would hide under the covers, barely breathing, hoping they could not see me and would go away. My brother also heard voices in the house, but he would talk back to them - I was too afraid to do this. Anyway, he slept in a different room, and the voice he heard came from someone who claimed to be one of our relatives, who had possibly died in the house - not the current house, but the one that was there before. The voice told Kevin his name, and we were able to find this name in the family Bible, even though neither of us had heard this name before. This was when Kevin was three years old.

I don't get it. People dream without sound? You mean you just get images ? Are the images in color? Really, I had to stop and think if I could remember any dreams without sound. Maybe I did but can't remember any.

I'm not sure I *hear* conversations when I'm dreaming. I may just *know* what's being said. (After all, I am the one making it all up!)

I'm with chisue. I have no idea if I dream in sound, but have certainly never considered my dreams to be silent. They simply "are", for lack of a better term. They're usually complicated with much imagery woven throughout.
