Kitchen appliance dilemma
Comments (1)Right off the bat, I'd say you can save $500 by getting the Sharp microwave drawer - I thought all the microwave drawers were made by sharp and rebranded by others....See Morekitchen design and appliance dilemma
Comments (22)Agree with much of the above regarding island size, not doing open shelves near the range, not enough counter space, etc. All very good advice. How much do you cook? Is your kitchen for use or for show? I would NOT get a Miele coffee system. The coffee is not that good and a pain when they need service. The best American coffee is actually the least expensive - a Chemex pour-over or an Aeropress and invest in a good grinder like a Solis Meastro so you'll always have fresh ground. If you really want a machine then look at either Nespresso or for just American coffee a Cuisinart drip w/ a good grinder. Given the lack of windows, make sure you have good lighting. Not just a lot of it but pay close attention to color temp (you'll want something warmer so more towards 25k) and color spectrum. Anything less than 92 CRI color spectrum will not be pleasant and ideally you'll want 94 CRI or better. Place downlights approx over the inside front edge of counters so that you light your work area well with as little glare and shadows as possible....See Morekitchen remodel dilemma
Comments (11)C B, With the additional photos you posted I can see more clearly why you want to make the change as there is no counter top space around the stove or refrigerator so if you are a family that likes to cook, it would be a pain with this current design. Moving the sink over looking the window? It's a toss up in my book, because that table where family gatherings are give a pleasant view of the deck. I'm in the land of heat and humidity, but because you have a basement that gives you venting options to install registers in the floor. Although if this heating system is boiler generated heat, that will likely raise the cost and complications. With that said it may be worth it to think about this further, because kitchens can make or break a house... not only when living there, but also when it comes time to sell. It's a nice big kitchen that was poorly designed originally... in my opinion you need more counter space to make the kitchen more cook friendly. One option would be to take out that wall oven and the cook top and then put in a dual oven with stove top over where the range hood is currently. Make counter space where the wall oven is currently. Reinstall the table so the longer part of it is against the wall, more eaters will get the view of the deck while they eat, this will give you a bit more room in the center for an island with more much needed counter space. Install a sink in that new island with electric outlets. Put the sink in so when the cook is using it they can look out the window. The advantages to this suggestion are off the hook. It would cut your costs a lot. Leave heating as it is. No need to resize windows and then have more costs to fix siding issues. You get the window view times 2. Family sits down to eat and a sink island that looks out that same window. Counter space is increased by taking out wall oven, putting in dual range where current stove top is. Prep work is easier you have counter space next to refrigerator (the wall oven is replaced with additional counter space) and a few feet in the center the new island counter with sink. I love home repair shows. LOL....See MoreBest Kitchen appliance(s) to have to survive a remodel?
Comments (29)We are nearing the end of our recent kitchen remodel and found that what worked for us a empty nest couple was to set up a temporary kitchen and eating space in our nearby dining room. We used our ninja Foodi constantly, which is a great appliance that you can use to air fry, pressure cook, and even sauté, roast and bake. For two people it worked well for most dinners. There are lots of great recipes online that can help maximize its use. I made tacos using the sauté function to brown ground beef or chicken, then pushed the meat to one side to make room to heat a can of refried beans. We took leftovers to work for lunch where we both have access to microwaves. I do wish we’d been able to have use of a small microwave, but I didn’t want to spend money on something we’d need for only a month. Friendly neighbor allowed me to pop across the street to heat things quickly a time or two. I also used the Foodi to pressure cook hard boiled eggs, cook a pound of bacon for BLTs, make “magic” spaghetti that requires no boiling of pasta, etc. I knew before we remodeled that the Foodi was a workhorse but found during our project that it was invaluable! We kept our toaster handy and used that for BLTS, warming tostada shells and well, toast. Clean up was as much a challenge as cooking. I bought three cheap plastic dishpans and set up a station on our BBQ prep table, located right next to a hose bib. We also have an outlet nearby that we used to power a work light as well as an electric kettle. I cannot tell you how much I loved having that electric kettle to heat water for not only cooking things, but also the cleaning up! Washed items in one dishpan, used a second one to set soapy dishes in to later rinse well with the hose, then poured a final rinse of hot water from the kettle to help things dry more quickly. It worked pretty well. We also tried to wipe off plates and bowls as well as we could. Greasy things were not fun. Pic of our dishwashing area. Good luck with your project!...See MoreZalco/bring back Sophie!
