Flooring Design Dilemma

Red Oak stain mixing

Hi, There are obviously a million discussions about staining red oak floors but I'm hoping to get some clarification. I, like many of you, want to stain my red oak floors to deemphasize red/orange/yellow tones but don't want to go too dark or too gray. Based on other posts it seems like people have had success with 50/50 special walnut + weathered oak stain or 50/50 medium brown + weathered oak stain. Does anyone have pictures of these combos? Or another similar combo you can recommend that can give me a not-too-yellow, not-too-red, not-too-gray, not-too-dark look? I know this perfect stain exists!! Thank you for your help.

p.s. unfortunately we will be out of town for this flooring project so can't spend too much time testing samples.

You really need to see stain samples on your flooring in your light. Pictures on computer monitors are notoriously misleading.

Another reason not to mix custom stains. It doesn't take much to make the incorrect mix. Samples are measured with spoons, then you have to figure out the ratio for the actual project. It becomes more difficult when you need to do touch ups or spot fixes, which will most likely result in a entire floor refinish. Make things easy for yourself and stick to standard colors.

White Oak - Thinned down white pickle or something like Bona NordicSeal or NaturalSeal. Red Oak - Forget it. This color is almost a raw wood White Oak tone. Red Oak will never achieve the same look.
