Veronica americana? Veronica scutellata? (British Columbia)
Comments (1)Hard to tell without seeing the whole plant if it isn't V. anagallis-aquatica or another similar species. It isn't V. scutellata though because it typically has flowers on longer pedicels (and very slender leaves if you can show those)....See Moreis there a " best" veronica austriaca?
Comments (3)F.W.I.W. I see that under British conditions anyway 'Crater Lake Blue' and 'Royal Blue' were apparently determined to be top performers in 1993 (A.G.M. = Award of Garden Merit): http://apps.rhs.org.uk/agm/Award2.asp?User2=Hrb&crit=veronica%20and%20austriaca Closer to home Chicago Botanic Garden also has an ongoing garden plant evaluation program of some scope. I found this on their web site (unfortunately it appears the only forms of this species they looked at were 'Crater Lake Blue' and a pale one): https://www.chicagobotanic.org/downloads/planteval_notes/no33_veronica.pdf...See MoreShould I Place Veronica Speedwall In Front of Knockout Roses
Comments (6)As Babs mentioned, there are many types/cultivars of Veronica -- some mat-like groundcovers, all the way to around 3 footers. What is your main vantage point for the roses? If you're mainly looking out at them from the window/porch, it's fine to plant taller varieties in front of them and the spikes would look lovely peeking out from behind, but if you're looking at them from the front, then obviously place taller plants out to the side or in the back so as not to block the view of the roses. I think that's a mistake many people make -- you need to consider the main viewing line, not just "the front". Anyway, shorter varieties will be just fine in front or anywhere next to them. What color are the roses? If the traditional "Knockout color", be reeaalllly careful which color flowers you place next to them --> to my eye, lilac, purple-red, or certain shades of pink would look horrid with that Knockout color (Veronica comes in various colors/tones and shades of purple and pink; white, too). If you're dealing w/Blushing Knockout, you've got a lot wider variety of colors to work with to avoid an obnoxious color clash....See MoreWill I like Veronica Speedwell more than Salvia?
Comments (4)In my garden V. Royal Candles doesn’t flop. As long as the flowers aren’t flopping into the path the bumblebees shouldn’t be an issue since they are about as nonaggression a critter as exists. (I have literally had one fly into me more than once and have not ever gotten stung by one despite their liking many flowers near my front walk.) Despite that I haven’t noticed them visiting V. Royal Candles. I can totally identify with finding the pong of many of the Savias, especially if one brushes against the foliage, to be decidedly unpleasant....See Morelovemycorgi z5b SE michigan
