Any recommendations for a subway tile darker than MSI Dove Gray?
Hi! Kitchen renovation to start mid August and struggling with picking a backsplash. We will have Chantilly Lace cabinets with Cambria Highgate counters. We have natural oak hardwood floors. MSI Dove Gray is close, but hoping to find something a shade or two darker if it exists. Thanks in advance.

Comments (12)Is there a grout color that's LIGHTER than the very popular Platinum from HD's Custom Polyblend? I just had a mosaic carrara marble backsplash installed. I had them grout a spare piece with bright white and with platinum. Surprisingly, the Platinum changes the tone of the entire tile making it seem much grayer. If you look from a few feet away at the tile, you'd swear that the half thats grouted with Platinum is much darker marble than the half that's grouted white. Given this, I was wondering if there was a lighter gray than Platinum that was out there. Any suggestions? Comments (57)Well, I'm back .. for punishment or for info either way ... I never received any email updates on this thread so wasn't sure it was getting any attention or updates .. wow my surprise! Where to start .. well, we didn't hire a CG - which was a bit of a mistake in planning our back bathroom and car port area that was converted to a room - but nonetheless we're learning as we go, as many people do in their first reno. I'm not going to get into why this was converted into a room, we didn't do it, but the previous owners did. They had a leak issue in the room so we fixed it last year. This year we decided to take care of the room itself, and had no ideas what we wanted. We added radiant floor heating, raised the ceiling 2 ft (in the room not the bathroom because of joist limitations, ect), and had roughed in plumbing (without really thinking of a pre-fab shower pan or custom tile and custom glass - this was one of our costly mistakes). Not having a CG - or asking questions ahead of time - cost us. But we're happy with what we have. Now onto the work itself ... behind the walls are DensShield with latricrete HYDRO BAN and HYDRO BANî Sheet Membrane taped seams everywhere ... the grouting lines and tiles were vertical at the top because the house isn't square, and in fact neither are the walls. You'll notice in the picture the tiles get larger on the inside of the shower than they do on the outside. My tiler recommended the lay the tiles that way since the top row would then have a small piece which would be larger on one side than the other. A tapered subway tile Vs what you see now wouldn't have looked as good. So I took his advice. The shower pan he built as well and is in fact sloped 1.5" to the drain from where the glass will start (installation next week) - 2" actually to the inside of the drain. Anyway, we're happy with the job with what he had to work with, tile, colors, ect. The room was painted last night and once the toilet, sink and stacker washer/dryer are in, i'll re-post with the finished color and product - no matter how much criticism. Comments (23)Oh Seg! How funny you should post. I was looking at your kitch (one of my faves, you know) on the FKB and could not for the life of me find out what GROUT you used! And then you chimed in here on this thread. Ahhhhh. I think I am going to go with the Delorean. People's dark grout is making me feel good about it. Seg, our counters are carrara *but* our sink is soapstone. We are going to (hopefully) keep it unoiled. I think the grout will tie in with the sink nicely because it is sort of the inverse coloring of the cararra and all the cabs on that wall and most of the hardware is white. So on that wall there will be our stainless steel fridge, bottom cabinet hardware in sn, sn faucets, gray and white mirror and then the carrara (lots of gray veining) white knobs on uppers and white tile. Comments (8)I'd need to see pix of what your other choices look like together to have an informed opinion. FWIW - we are going with gray subways from Daltile. I had tried to find a certain color, then another, in subways and when I could not find the right shade of either, we settled on the gray. It is a little different than plain white, but is also a neutral. It works with the colors of our kitchen so it was an easy decision between the 2. It was well cheaper than handmade tiles, but it does not look like handmade tiles. We figured we were willing to pay the premium to get exactly what we wanted, but were not willing to pay more for something that is now meant more as background than a feature. I'd have loved to get crackle in the right color or even gray, but could not justify the difference at the time we ordered. By that point in the process, money was tighter. last yearI tried but none with white cabinets. A member here used a darker gray backsplash, but the lighting makes it look really dark in the photo. It’s not really this dark.

last yearI think that you'll be happiest with white, because it will never blend with the cabinets -- it will have different texture, shine, whatever. Otherwise, the Dove Gray might well be dark enough: in your first photo it's a little close to the stone, but in the second photo it's quite different, so obviously the amount of light matters. Now put the counter sample horizontal and the tile sample vertical -- you've reproduced the difference in light conditions that can make a backsplash darker in situ. Have you seen the Dove next to the "gloomy" samples from your company? because I'll bet they're not that different. Don't go darker.
My second choice would be to bring in a gentle color, like a pale bottle green. Here's a kitchen I did that had pale gray counters (Lagoon) with shiny white or textured gray cabinets, and a pale backsplash, and it was great!

last yearI ordered a large sample of the countertop to get a better idea. I also have more samples of the tile coming as well. Lighting definitely matters. This was a pic with the backsplash tile vertical and counter sample horizontal.
