I believe white ash (Fraxinus americana) is basically a zone 5 tree anyways with some disjunct populations in northern Wisconsin.

eta: I am increasingly seeing half dead stands of ash showing signs consistent with EAB infestation in my area.

Its sad. Try one if its going someplace it can die and not cost you dearly?

There is a white ash here in a neglected yard that turns the most beautiful purple in the fall. Only white ash I know of in my town. It’s about 30 feet tall. Many green ash here (there aren’t many anyway) have been hammered by late and early frost recently, but this lone white ash has not. I figure it’s worth a shot. This yard also has a beautiful arborvitae which are like impossible to grow here. Must be magic dirt.

EAB is not even in Cheyenne and would have to make it across the hill to Laramie, find a host tree of which there are not many and find my future hypothetical tree. I may take my chances. yolo

Sorry Lane, I can't say. All the native ash here are blacks and greens. There may be a white planted somewhere in someone's yard but even if I saw it, I'm not sure I'd be able to say if it's a white or not.

We have some good sized Ash (I'm thinking green), around town and so far, no sign of EAB. The all have a deep yellow/orangish Fall color. The blacks are mostly in the wetter areas and can have nice bright yellow Fall display. Those are the ones I've been seeing in mass exodus.

I have a Fraxinus nigra in my front yard that's about 9 years old. So far, so good But I have a Stihl 250 out in the garage JIC. ;-))

I’ve only grown Autumn Purple, but I believe seedling fall color is highly variable, not unlike what you’d get with red maple or blue beech. Almost always good and sometimes stunning. If you go the seedling route, I’d buy in person and wait until fall when you can verify the color.

I'd find out who the gardener was and ask him how he did it. ;-)

But seriously, If a specimen grows good where you are and there isn't enough of a population of Ash to support EAB's spread, what have you got to loose? Except maybe $100 or so.

Can you find a supplier in your area? Mail order?

Hardiness does vary somewhat among the cultivars, and although Autumn Purple does have reasonably good cold hardiness (we had no issues here other than the occasional frost crack on younger trees), there are a few others that are supposed to be better for colder regions (but they may be hard to find): Autumn Blaze, Northern Blaze, Nobility

Yes, SE Michigan has the dubious distinction of being the epicenter of the EAB invasion. AFAIK, no ash trees have been grown or sold here since 2002, although now that the state quarantine has been repealed (in 2018) perhaps some sellers will begin to offer ash species/hybrids that have known resistance to EAB. Prior to 2002 we regularly planted several different cultivars of white and green ash. A few of those are still intact thanks to residents who have taken it upon themselves to treat their street trees from the early days of infestation.

Out of curiosity, how much is an EAB treatment?

The cost varies depending on tree size and product used. I think a rough estimate of the cost for treating a 10-12" diameter tree with a soil drench (applied by the homeowner) would be around $25 to $40 annually, and a trunk injection with emamectin benzoate (by a professional) that lasts 2 years can run maybe $150 to $200. Not worth it plant something else

Most of what I see are in wet/swampy areas. But I didn't examine anything that closely so it could be something else other than EAB.

A few years ago. when I first noticed, the trees I saw appeared to have new shoots from the lower trunk with dead tops, but the last few sightings the entire stand of trees were dead.

Both green and black ash grow around here and where they grow is generally areas that are on the wet side and I've been seeing this for several years now, before we had all this dry weather.

If I get a chance, I'll talk to the extension guys and see what they say.

Did some checking. Found a map from the DNR MN that shows the counties with EAB quarantines and infestations. First found in St. Paul in 2009.

I'm up in the southwest corner of Wadena County, right on the border between 3b and 4a. So maybe far enough north to keep them at bay. (The green rectangle around Wadena County is from me for a visual so not part of the original map.)

According to this map, I'm so far, so good and the map is current AFAICT.
