Help with long living room

Hello! My partner and i recently moved in to our first place together. We are mid 20s and cant afford a ton of new stuff, but have been collecting some pieces here and there trying to piece together our home. (Except the new giant tv. That was a NECESSARY purchase by my partner obviously ;) ) I am pretty happy with the way things have turned out, but my problem is the living room space doesnt really feel cohesive. It is a very long room. Its about 18x13 ft and im just not sure how to tie everything together. i think the room could use a rug, but im not sure what size or how to set up the lay out. I am new to all this :). Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! PS please ignore dust and dog mess :)

What does the wall opposite the double window look like? You will get better advice if we know where the doorways are.

The sectional will continue to dominate the room and it can't be moved so TV can be properly viewed. Here are a couple of charts to help you. Next time you have the option to buy seating, a 3-seat sofa and two upholstered armchairs are the most flexible options. Save sectionals for your dedicated media room. Pulling the sectional away from the walls a bit will actually make the room feel more spacious. The chair should be angled toward the sectional to make for a good area to socialize with guests. As for TV, you might actually consider mounting it above the fireplace since it is really too far from seating for good viewing. Then we can treat the TV area as your foyer right there by the door.

With so many openings, paint color(s) are so wrong, as you have stated. With two focal points (fireplace and windows), choose one wall color. I can advise if you tell me from where natural light is coming from through the two large windows. You can leave the mirror. Good reflective possibilities. You can put a framed mirror over the mirror…kind of cool look. The t v and stand…are those yours? If so, move them to another room. I am perplexed as you are…why is there an opening by the fireplace wall into the dining room? Don’t know your budget, but I would spend the money to close that area?. Waste of wonderful floor space to allow for two chairs on either side of the fireplace. Your floors? Laminate? If so, you need a large rug to reduce noise. Back to your question…sorry. I would break the space up into two separate areas. Maybe two chairs and a table by fireplace to start your scheme..

You appear to have baseboard heat/ac beneath those windows. That's something that would need to be addressed if you build in a window seat and/or taken into account if you place your sofa in that window bay. One drawback to having a sofa floating in the middle of the room (as shown in your pic) is that there are no end tables with lamps (hidden cord issues) for either end of your sofa ... unless you're setting one end table between the sofa and the wall that separates the living room and kitchen. Your walk-thru path would then be between the sofa and the large window/window/seat. If you prefer the back of your sofa against the wall (with end tables on each end), another option might be to move the doorway between the living room and dining room closer to the fireplace and face your sofa toward and centered with the large window with a couple of swivel rockers and table between them in that window bay.

Hmmm. It looks to me like you are planning to buy two lounge chairs and put a round table between them. Instead, I would buy 2 swivel chairs, and eliminate putting a round table between them so you can easily swivel the chairs all the way around to face the windows. In each window I would put a chaise lounge that has bench storage. I'd put the two chaise lounges facing each other. The idea here is that the kids can sit in the lounges and read by the windows of they like, and have conversations with whoever is sitting in the swivel chairs. here's my idea for an affordable stain resistant swivel chair Here's some storage chaises at the opposite end of the room I'd build one long activity table, wall to wall, something very simple. I'd add chairs for the kids so they could sit and draw, or do puzzles. I'd put shelves and cubbies nearby for them to put their stuff away. trellis curtains maybe this rug

Tried tv on sofa wall [where white/grey pillow is], and rotate sectional, and move over for doorway, etc.?

It would help if you could post a thumbnail sketch of the floor plan indicating all the dimensions and location of doorways and windows. First measure overall dimensions. Then start in a corner and measure the perimeter. Corner to window frame > window including frame > frame to corner .> corner to window frame > window including frame > frame to door opening > etc. you get the idea. Would be happy to do a floor plan for you and It would help all other posters.

Replace the lounge chair with the most comfortable and attractive swivel chair you can afford. Bring it out into the room so someone can use it to watch TV or converse with anyone sitting on the sofa.

For simplicity’s sake, I’d put a long low bookcase-bench in front of the window.

Get a bigger framed artwork for over the mantle.

A rug for the area of the fireplace-sofa space woutd be nice but keep it simple. Sisal or jute would be fine. Have more fun or get cozier with your sofa pillows and throws. You have so much light, grow houseplants! Even trees ;)
