Thuja for zone 9

Hi! i live in southern California (zone 9) and would really like some Thuja green giant trees for privacy. I know there are much better choices, but i just love the look, growth rate, and thickness the thujas have. Would they would do ok in the dry climate and zone? any drought tolerance to them? I will also be deep irrigating once or twice a week once established.

Green Giants can certainly grow in a zone 9 - they do so beautifully in mine - but that only measures their tolerance to winter temperatures. It does not address how well they might fair in a hot, arid summer climate.

They would not be my first choice for you. They are not particularly drought tolerant, preferring consistently moist soils. Unless you can provide them with as much water as they need - a difficult task under your watering restrictions - establishment will be slow and rapid growth curbed.

They are also highly flammable, explosively so under dry conditions, which is another significant reason not to plant in SoCal where fire risk is high.

- East Palo Alto is not SoCal....and inland SoCal at that.
- A weekly deep watering is not sufficient to get new trees established, especially in a climate that lacks any significant rainfall for most of the year.
- Not "everything" is flammable and why the state has recommendations for what to plant and how close to any structures or other flammable objects they should be planted. Highly resinous conifers like any kind of thuja should be avoided.
- A plant being sold at Home Depot carries NO guarantee of suitability for the location where it is being sold. That should be fairy obvious to anyone gardening longer than 6 moths!!
- They do not come highly recommended by CalPoly's Selectree or local extension services and master gardeners.
No one is saying they can't grow in SoCal.......they are just not the best choice for various reasons.

Even if they were hardy which according to everything I read about them, they are not, they would turn brown the first sign of typical zone 5 winter temps. I am just to the north of atlanta, what people refer to as z7, and those trees which are very common here brown out by mid winter. Had I known how dissatisfied I would eventually be with this brown period I would have planted something that stays green. I'm not saying not to just that I wouldn't put them in a real high profile area. That is because the trees look like they have died. I thnk keeping them indoors is a particularly bad idea as well and will set you up for failure with this tree in your climate.

I've been growing Tacca Integrifolia (White bat plant) in the ground for 3 years. It flowers every September. Also Medinilla Magnifica, but no blooms yet. Several heliconia in the ground: Rostrata, Schiedeana, Angusta Red Christmas. All have bloomed but need to be protected. Trialing a Jade Vine this winter. Growing Musa Ae Ae in the ground for 4 years. Took two pups this summer; no fruit yet. Growing Rangoon Creeper. No problems; blooms every summer. I'm sure there are more, just can't remember. Steve

Grafting a mature caprifig (zone 9b/sunset zone 18)

Hi folks, A friend's household (in SoCal zone 9b/sunset zone 18) has a 3 year old volunteer fig tree. It's about 10 feet tall, with a very nice upright structure they'd like to preserve, and has just produced its first ripe figs. As you might expect from a volunteer, the figs are terrible. They are quite large, resembling brown turkey figs in appearance and flavor (not good ones - the watery, flavorless ones you find in the grocery at times). They are sweet (as sweet as the grocery store brown turkey figs, anyway), but contain large branching structures full of nasty-tasting bitter pollen. I regret that I didn't take a photo, but they are very distinct from the female parts of the synconium. We're discussing the possibility of grafting this tree (not now - next year), and they say they would prefer to retain the upright shape and single trunk. I know people seem to prefer to propagate figs by rooting cuttings, but it would seem a shame to waste a 3 year old root system. I'm pretty new to grafting and have never grafted a mature tree before (so please forgive me if I get some terminology wrong). Do we have options that would allow us to preserve the tree's overall shape? Do we really need to chop the trunk off down low, or could we just cut off and graft all the scaffold branches? I know that if we try to go the latter route, we'll have a devil of a time with suckering, but if they prefer being really vigilant about removing suckers over risking loss of the structure they like, would this be an option for them? Would it create problems in terms of graft acceptance? I would appreciate any sage advice, as would my friend's household, who are understandably disappointed after watching the tree for two summers and netting it this year, and would love to be able to make lemonade (...fig-ade?) of this situation.

The struggle is very real! Colorado is a hard place to garden. Many of us come from other places where you can stick anything in the ground and it will grow. You can still garden successfully here, it just requires a change in mind set about plant selection, at least at first. I tried planting what I wanted, just watering the heck out of plants to compensate for our arid climate and intense sun. I came to understand (the hard way, of course) that what's beautiful is what will grow well here. Start small, select plants for your site conditions and enjoy the success you have with them. Then build from there until you've created some protected areas to try more finicky plants. Hand watering trees is recommended at least the first 2 or three years for a couple of reasons. First, lawn sprinklers don't do a great job of getting enough water to the root zones of trees. They're more designed for surface watering a few inches deep. Trees in general and evergreens (conifers) in particular require slow, deep, infrequent watering and don't like having their foliage wet from overhead sprinklers. In other words, trees want to be watered very differently that grass. Drip irrigation, soaker hoses or hand watering works best for trees. I'm coming from a DIY standpoint. I've been planting seedlings for windbreak on a 2 acre plot north of Denver. Windswept prairie, no neighbors for a 1/4 mile. I've been at it for 9 years and have planted each tree myself with help from my husband on a few larger splurges. I have patience in spades and a budget that dictates smaller trees that don't require machinery or hired help. Your goals may be very different. It sounds like you may want more instant gratification, bigger trees to start with. How long you plan to stay at your place is a consideration, too. It was a good idea to visit City FloraI. Nurseries will make good suggestions for trees, but keep in mind they also want to sell you the trees they have on hand. Would you be doing the planting or do you intend to have landscapers do the work? Consider visiting the Denver Botanic Gardens to see what trees look like full grown and what does well here. Also take pictures of landscapes in town you admire. You may find something you like as well as thuja, but better suited to your space. Don't be afraid to make a mistake, it's how we learn! But, I understand not wanting to make a mistake if you're planning to spend thousand for an instant landscape. Hand planting a few trees to see how they do is a completely different undertaking. Barb

Why do you find it necessary to attempt to refute every point I made? It's very childish.
- Palo Alto is northern California and coastal. It is an entirely different climate and growing situation than southern California and inland SoCal at that (which is where any SoCal zone 9 is located).
- A single person reportedly growing them in a similar climate is hardly a blanket endorsement.
- Any plant that is not drought tolerant after establishment - not requiring weekly watering - is a poor choice for a drought stricken state under ongoing watering restrictions.
- Home Depot selling tropicals has nothing to do with the issue at hand.
They are an okay choice, not good and nowhere close to best. I'd encourage the OP to consider better suited alternatives
