I do like the look and a buttery yellow is in the running. A friend had suggested gray also, but I must admit I am having trouble picturing that. As far as the bright white, I don't think I would do that, as in the rest of the house, except for mudroom and half bath off the mudroom, all trim is painted a creamy white. In fact it is the same white as the cupboard/hutch is painted now. What I did think was to paint all terracotta the cream color (like other woodwork) and then maybe the walls a soft buttery almost yellow? But then I would have to paint the hutch a different color, but then what color for that? Also, would I then paint the cupboards and woodwork in the mudroom as well as the wainscot the creamy white too? or a different color? jillinnj, all woodwork in the house except the kitchen, mudroom and 1/2 bath off the mudroom is painted a creamy white. The kitchen, mudroom and 1/2 bath all have the wainscot. Yes, if I change the terracotta color it will be a lot of work and a lot of painting! :-( but part of me is really getting tired of the terracotta although it is unique? Plus I do feel it really darkens the rooms. You are right, it is an old Crystal coffee grinder that is mounted on the cupboard. melle sacto, buttery yellow on the walls or wainscott?

I think an aubergine as well. You know I love BM Velvet Cloak! But that might just be too dark in there... I'd look at the greens from the BM Affinity deck--Anjou Pear, Agave or Wasabi. I have never found a blue I like on the walls. But that's just me. Although I did try Adagio and I really did love it, but it was wrong where I was trying it. I would consider that color in a room. Not necessarily better. Just different. And it depends. The BenM Color Preview deck is a collection of color strings. Each strip started with a hue parent and then 6 child colors were created by reducing the formula in uniform increments. The majority of the strips in the fandeck are different values of colors from the same hue family and same (ish) chroma. Chroma being how grayed or vivid the color is. The Color Preview fandeck is unique because it is the only one out there from common, major brands that's a collection of color strings. People think every fandeck is like Preview, color strings on each strip, but they're not. In most brands, you'll find colors from different hue families on the same strip and the arrangement of value and chroma is not perceptually uniform. The Classic Colors collection was compiled and arranged by the BenM color director at the time it was developed. Which means the arrangement of colors on the strips is purely subjective. Which is why there's no rhyme or reason to the order of the colors on strips or the fandeck itself. It really depends on the project. What region, interior or exterior... it just depends... either one or both collections might be useful. Regional color is probably the biggest consideration as far as which fandeck you should reach for first. One of my least favorite "color tips" is that only 20% of the colors in any fandeck are "good" colors and no one uses the other 80%. While specifying color nationally and internationally I quickly learned WHY a fandeck has over 3,000 colors. Different colors are ideal for different regions. The % of colors that are ideal for the light and seasons in the U.S. Midwest aren't necessarily the same colors that are ideal for the Southwest region, for example. Most people only use the 20% of a collection that's well-suited to where they live.

Patricia did give great advice on making sure your lighting is optimized before you move to picking colors. Different color lightbulbs can really change the way a color looks at night or when lights are turned on vs when daylight is streaming through your windows. Daylight bulbs simulate natural daylight and will have less yellow tones. For your home and color palette daylight is what I would pick. When I selected colors I really picked some pretty random colors to give you a broad choice so that we could find out where you are focused. Do you have a brand of paint that you prefer? I see that you have used SW in the past and are trying SW colors, are you adverse to Benjamin Moore? I happen to find the virtual painter in SW more user friendly, so I use it more than BM, but both really only give you a general idea of what a color will look like in your home. Computers have a long way to go before they can be used to accurately represent color. But with your feedback we know a little more about where your heart is taking you we can better assist you. Lori and I both use LCH data to help us guide people in selecting the "perfect" color. Rather than just looking at a fan deck and trying to determine what will look good in your home we can refine the search as you test colors in your space. The way color is defined is by measuring the light, chroma and hue. Light - how light or dark a color is Chroma - how gray or colorful a color is Hue - what is the core color (red, yellow, green, blue. . . ) Here are the 4 colors that were mentioned above with their LCH values plus 2 additional colors. If Agreeable Gray felt dark, Gossamer Veil is just a tinge lighter and may not be what you are looking for. I added Drift of Mist - very similar to Gossamer Veil, but lighter and a bit more gray and Egret White - very similar to Agreeable Gray, but lighter. Here are some choices surrounding Gray Wisp. One of my personal favorites is Comfort Gray, And a few between the first group and the greener hues. Test a few that you think you will like and let us know what is wrong/right about each one that you test. Try to pick a couple that are lighter, a couple that are darker and a couple different hues so you get a nice variety and can hone in on the right one. I also always have one sample of the white base and will mix a bit in when testing to see if I like the color in a lighter shade. I use oral syringes to measure how much white I am adding. Some other tips - many people will advise you to buy samples from https://samplize.com/ - it is easier than painting your own samples, but you can't play with the color. The other drawback is that it is much smoother than your walls and they are sprayed. Spraying and rolling can alter the colors. Some others will tell you to paint samples on foam core - I have the same issue with the smoothness. I think the difference is substantial enough that I won't trust purchased samples.
