Wedi for entire bathroom floor: good idea of overkill?
Comments (6)If this is DIY, then Wedi seems easier. That could just be me, though. Not saying that a lot of people don't make Ditra work, but Wedi's only requirement is to goop caulk on any seams and screw/washer thingies. Ditra seems like you might need a little more talent. We used Wedi on our floor, primarily as a thermal break between our concrete and heating mat, but I can tell you that we are pretty stupid sometimes and the Wedi wasn't even vaguely daunting. It would totally work. Maybe read the installation instructions for both and then choose, knowing either will get you to where you need to go if you install it correctly. I would imagine that they recommend 1/4" because the deflection for your floor should be dealt with prior to either Wedi or Ditra, and whichever you choose is just a small layer, NOT support or anything like that. (I'm sure there is a more technical way to put this. I hope you get my point here.) I can't tell you if there is a structural of efficacious advantage or disadvantage to either one....See More24" sink cabinet - Good idea? Bad idea?
Comments (24)Lots of useful points here, thanks. After doing some measuring, we would up tentatively deciding that we'll put in a 36" sink cabinet. We'd have so little room in a 24" cab around a garbage disposal (assuming same model we have now, and assuming the drain is in the center) that we'd be hard pressed to store trash under the sink. So with a 24" cabinet, we'd probably wind up losing 15" somewhere else to making a dedicated trash pull out. Thus it's actually efficient to just go to the 36" sink base. (The 30" doesn't work as well as 24 and 36 sizes, for various reasons involving window placement and ikea sizing.) If we stay with this decision, it seems we'll have a lot of latitude in selecting a sink size / configuration. I'll almost certainly go ahead and move to a larger sink - the question will be whether to maximize the potential of the large cabinet or keep the sink scaled to down a bit since the kitchen is smallish and the window in front of which the sink will be set is just 30". With the current cabinet choices open to me, my main work areas in the kitchen will be 33" to the right of the sink cabinet base, and 54-61" on the left of it. Plus however much smaller the sink opening is than the 36" span of the base cabinet. A little more prep space is always a good thing, but so is making dirty mixing bowls disappear....See MoreIs glass tile in a shower a bad idea?
Comments (13)Glass tiled shower floor? I sure hope nobody ever does that. Not only is glass too fragile for a floor but also way too slippery for a shower. EEK! Creative Tile - Thanks for the info. The tile is 18" x 36" does that make any difference? It will only be on the walls of a larger shower in Southern California. I mention that because I think those things reduce the possibility of cracking due to thermal shock, which as I understand it means suddenly going from very cold to very hot. The glass will never start any colder than room temperature and the shower spray will not reach the walls, it will always hit the floor first. But I don't know how low a glass tile's tolerance can be, so perhaps even this is a potential risk. I can say that I have handled a sample of the tile and nothing about it seems/feels cheap (including the actual price). Without someone telling me it is OK, I will definitely avoid the epoxy grout. If I go forward with this tile, that tip is invaluable! Regarding setting material, isn't there a product that you can just know will be good enough for any glass tile? I'm not trying to pinch pennies here, the tile is expensive and I don't want a repair job later. So I'll spend whatever I need to spend now to avoid problems in the future. The price difference between using quality materials and lesser materials pales in comparison to a future repair. And thank you for taking the time to share you knowledge with people. So many folks like you make Houzz an incredible resource. There are a lot of people here that I owe a beer to. And there are some I owe a fancy dinner!...See Moremarble shower: bad idea or worst idea ever?
Comments (20)@wannabath - I don't know what a "perfect" tile install would be but my very skilled installers certainly didn't make me sign any waivers with regard to my marble installation. What they did with the help of my designer was to lay out the tiles so that they created a very nice variation. This is what my wood floor installers did in terms of taking the time to make sure that the boards were appropriately placed so that they appeared "random". They were just out last week because I am having them tile my balcony and spent a LONG time examining the tile samples and conferring with the GC and my designer to determine exactly how the job would be done to get the results I wanted. I spoke to my designer since I hadn't been onsite when my bathrooms were done and she said it was standard operating procedure for the tile setters to have the sample tiles available in order to evaluate and determine the best way to proceed. They went out on the balcony to look at the site conditions which was especially critical since I need the appropriate slope AWAY from the door and towards the weep holes so that the balcony has appropriate drainage....See MoreAnon Fromca
