Self leveling concrete shower

In trying to level a shower floor before installing pan as it is off by up to half an inch in some areas. i used some plywood to lesson some of those areas, but im wondering how i block off the drain area so the self leveling concrete doesnt go into the shower drain hole.

plywood underlayment and curbs and sides of the shower are sealed, but not sure what to do about my drain hole…

Only idea ive come up with is to build up the area around the drain think a little volcano then grind it down with an angle grinder after the concrete has set?

Brilliant response i have a sealed shower pan on a plywood underlayment that i need to level and im wondering what the best method to block the drain is so i can get it perfectly level…what more details could you even need? ive sealed the floor and walls in all areas except the shower drain…

I'm concerned that a self-leveling concrete topping is not going to bond to your old floor. At minimum the original floor will need to be carefully pressure washed. Speak with a reputable retailer and, if possible, the distributor - don't seek advice from a home center because their staff generally is not knowledgable. As far as a "trench", you probably will not be adding a significant thickness. Sections of PVC resting on the original floor would probably be the easiest method. Good luck.

its a misleading term self leveling :), you must use a spike roller to get results, did you scarify and prime the slab ? encapsulate mastic properly? ambient temps and improperly prepped slab, abnormal moisture readings etc..

I think what you need is anew contractor who can answer that question for your situation. I did read a bit about it and it seems like the right choice for what you want . I love concrete floors and hope to do them if we ever move again.
