Clematis or Jasmine Climbing Vine - Zone 10A So Cal

I recently pulled out two mature bougainvilleas I planted on either side of an arbor as I was painting my house and they had climbed up to the roof line obscuring an entire front window. They were beautiful but just too woody, thorny, and aggressive. I want to replace it with a fast climber that is thinner branchers and less overwhelming but still offers deep green perennial leaves and showy blossoms like the bogey. Thinking Clematis but not known for my Zone 10A. Arbor is facing due south and gets sun all day. Jasmine is another option - I have night-blooming on my side yard in partial shade and would consider star jasmine for direct sun. Love the fragrant smell and like that's not messy like the bogey. Would appreciate any input on what variety of clematis people would recommend if I go that route. Need it to climb 8-10 ft and stretch over the top of the arbor. Soil is rather alkaline...I do have water where both root systems would start. Thanks in advance!
