Not only am I happy your son is getting better, I want to thank you for giving us a PSA.

After reading your story I immediately passed it on to DS who also lives in a rural area. I'm in OK and rattlers are closer to us than copperheads which I think ae mainly in eastern OK. We also have water moccasins that stray.

Every summer he puts up an above ground pool for the kids. He bought a new one put it up on Saturday. This one is much bigger and his backyard is on a slight slope. He and DH put decorative garden blocks under the pool to raise and level it off.

Lucille, yesterday evening while being high on snake alert because of your son, wouldn't you know it, our dog caught a snake next to the house in the shade. This is the second dog we've had that can smell a snake a mile away. He's an indoor/outdoor dog and when we hear a specific bark we get up and yep, he's already killed it and is flinging it in the air.

We've had several snakes over the year cooling off in the dark on our porches. Everyone be careful!

Thank you for asking. I just had lunch with him. His hand still looks horrible and he can't lift anything with that hand. He is monitoring himself with a list they gave him.

Plans as soon as he heals a bit are for making the area a little safer, maybe getting a leaf blower for the area aound the house and blocking the under house access to the dogs. Apparently it was a baby or very young copperhead and I am surmising that there may be more in the area.

I'm glad he is continuing to do well. I wish him a speedy recovery (and for your recovery from the nerves and stress, as well)

Copperheads and other snakes will look for sources of water and shade in hot weather, so always look before you turn on an outdoor faucet for example. They like to hide and are good at it. You will usually hear a rattlesnake if disturbed but not a copperhead.

No dog injury. There is a pond on the property, and plenty of forest (the house is located on a clearing after several miles of winding road from the main road) it sounds like a copperhead vacation spot. There will be no getting rid of the snakes, they will have to be careful and just keep the house/porch area clear of leaves and debris.

A friend here in Virginia was bit on the hand by one a few years back while moving a woodpile. He came in to the house and told his wife what happened and said he was going to drive himself to the ER. She responded "Oh no you're not! I'm driving you." He said that by the time they were about halfway to the hospital the pain was so great he wouldn't have been able to keep driving.

I saw my friend a few days later, and his hand look awful -- like it had been mangled in a piece of farm equipment. But the next time I saw him, his hand looked perfectly fine. So it's going to look worse before it gets better.

I live on a horse farm that is quite close to town, but I've seen copperheads here on a couple of occasions, and non-venomous snakes rather frequently, including finding two black rat snakes beneath the seat of my tractor. A worker in a forestry mulcher reportedly saw a big copperhead just a couple of weeks ago, in an area where he was working, and he dispatched it. Each time I see a snake I am startled and frightened, but I thus far I have always gone with the live-and-let-live approach. It is always disconcerting though when i see one, and then look away for just 30 seconds (perhaps to run get my camera) and after that it is nowhere to be seen.

Thank you for asking. The swelling has decreased and he has regained some use of his hand. Unfortunately there is another life changing side effect: At the time he was bitten, he was uninsured. I am very happy with the quality of the medical care he received, even though he was admitted to two different hospitals prior to ending up in the ICU of the second hospital.

But what is important is that he is alive, we can cope with anything else.

So glad your son is better and is regaining use of his hand. Too bad about the financial burden. I wish that never happened when people are sick or hurt.

So sorry about the insurance problem. I hope reasonable arrangemnts can be made. Awful. Glad your son is doing better.

I believe Hospitals have great payment schedule's at least in Michigan. We were offered a very affordable payment plan. If it is too high for his budget, just let them know.

I dont know how I missed all this but I am very glad to hear he is recovering. That is by far the most important thing. I'm sure payment arrangements can be made. You could also ask their financial aid department if there is any help available. My nephew had an accident years ago and was uninsured at the time, they worked with Catholic Charities thru the hospitals financial aid and they helped a great deal.

Insurance co are able to negotiate a huge reduction in fees. Maybe, an individual can also negotiate similar fee reductions.

Glad to hear your son is recovering. If the hospital is a non-profit they usually will look at his assets and make financial arrangements accordingly. If not, I would still check with the hospital business office manager and see what arrangements might be available.

Yes, glad he is well and continuing to heal. As far as the billing, I have nothing to add but to repeat many of the suggestions offered above. Everything is worth trying and pursuing . I am confident that the bills will be reduced, and he will definitely qualify for assistance. from one or more options.

Unfortunately it does take time and effort but it will come together.

When I was 10, we moved to NC so my stepfather could attend Duke Law School. I had to walk 3 miles to and from school. I found a small snake and stuck it in my overall pocket one day on the way home from school. Then I forgot about it. During dinner I remembered it was in my pocket and pulled it out to show my mother. I still remember the sound of the dish she dropped. It was a small copperhead, very much alive. No one got bit, thank god. My mother was a science teacher. I think she put in the freezer or a preservative to show her class.
