Gloves for prickly pear?

I've read older posts here saying that no gloves are useful against the glochids of prickly pear, but I was hoping that there are newer products that might be. My goal isn't to grip prickly pears, but to carefully get my hands between the pads to weed the beds.

So far, the best tool I've used is this one (not quite the one I have but the closest picture I could find) but there are time I can't get to the weed without sticking my hand in, and I inevitably spend the evening picking the hairs from my hand, despite the gardening gloves I've used. I've considered trying thick vinyl gloves, but the problem there is that I can't then pinch the weed (which'll likely be a thin stem) near the soil.

Leather gloves? The bulk might not be helpful though. BBQ tongs?

Unfortunately, leather gloves don't help. See, e.g., here. These are heavy leather gloves sold for handling cacti, but they specifically note "DO NOT use these gloves or any gloves to handle Cholla & Prickly Pear. Prickly Pear cacti not only have spines but have thousands of small whiskers called glochids that will get into most materials and are quite painful when transferred to your skin or eyes."

Tongs don't help tryiing to pull out, for example, knotweed: you need to very tightly grasp something that's a few millimeters thick, and in a confined area. I would need something pretty fine-tipped (say, the width of an index finger) that also manages to have strong grasping force. What makes the last part tricky is that it would have to be at least a foot, closer to 18" long so I can reach down to near soil level, so the lever principle is working against me.

Just so you know...the technical jargon...what you're calling micro splinters ~ are known as glochids. Yes, very good idea to keep duct tape handy for removal from skin (maybe gloves too?)! In the last set of pix Bellpepperguy posted, in the 1st, there is a bud on the left (& maybe one 2nd from the right). In the 2nd pic, the one on the right looks to be a bud. In the 3rd pic, that is a bud. =) It will be easier to tell as they grow a bit. Link below to a bud on an O. santa-rita. Here is a link that might be useful:

Just like Jeff said, the glochids are traditionally burned off. Cutting them while effective, is *way* too labor intensive to be done on a large scale, but works well enough for just a few fruits. A friend of mine has a really thick pair of leather gloves which she uses to more or less rub all the glochids off. That method has sort of mixed results (the glochids do come off, but usually more than a few end up in her arms), and don't expect to be able to use those gloves for anything else! :-) The seeds are a real hassle when it comes to eating the fruit. Most people end up making a jam or syrup out of the fruit so you can remove all the seeds. If you do this carefully, you can skip the glochid removing step too. Using heavy gloves, you can hold the fruit, slice it in half, and scoop the flesh right into the pot being careful not to get any glochids with the flesh. You just boil the fruit down (no water added) and are left with a thick syrup you can strain the seeds out of. If you ever get the chance, try the fruit of a Carengia gigantea (Saguaro). They are much more flavorful than any Opuntia fruit I've ever tried, and better yet, no glochids!

Hi Becca I have 2 kinds of prickly pear cactus, the fruit is good and one is yellow and the other red. I started them from seed and planted them on the west side. Because is protected from winds and freezes by the house it does well in this spot without any care even with all the rain and winds that we had. The soil is not amended. I only water mine when I see the pads showing signs of shriveling for at least a week. They're cactus after all and spend weeks in the wild baking under hot sun in gravely soil without rain. So, when my entire plant looks to be uniformly shriveling overall, I thoroughly water the fast-draining, sandy soil inside the pot until water runs freely out the bottom. Then that's it. Cactus will suck up water and store it in their pads and use the water over the next several weeks as needed. Cactus do not like to sit in moist soil and can develop rot around the base so make sure the media is coarse, sandy, gravely, low OM. Did I say they don't depend on moist soil? ;-) This all happens about once a month or so here, inside with forced air heat in the house. Summertime, outside, I just keep an eye on it and water as needed. Opuntia Elisiana: Basking in our 23.2 d high sun through the patio door. eta: new clay pot. :-)

I aggree with scot. I use a maggazine or news paper. Leather gloves are made of skin. and the let glocids in just like my hands and then the gloves are RUINED. I use a long hemostat for weeding around a cactus. I am lucky that my fater in law was a surgion and had many old doctor tools that I absconded with.
