Why not attach shed to balcony?

I'm still in thd process od designing my dream home and wanted to know why I don't see sheds attached to end pf a balcony?
I wanted a kitchen on my second floor to have attached balcony for summer and things like bbq etc.
Was wondering why not make a small two story shed at the end of my balcony to attach? That way in winter or rain I can easily slid things like Furniture and bbq stuff right inside the shed then use yhe bottom for things like lawn mower, snow shovel and other yard supplies.
Want opinions and thoughts.

I need to see your plan IMO a shed is best hidden and where it works best for use . I never put my BBQ away in the winter we BBQ all winter where I live in Canada nd honestly I have no clue as to what a 2 storey shed attached to a home would look like . So post pics of the architects plans please.

Why don't you build some sort of storage closet on each floor accessible from the outside on each level instead of tacking something onto the house design after the fact.

Idaho, The shed near you live reminds me of a book in my personal library on NE connected farm buildings - "Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn". I actually have a current design client who desires a very large custom house that gives a visitor the sense that it has been expanded through necessity, but with everything connected. Your vision sounds very charming. I can build an outbuilding by right (w/o going through PZ) up to 25% of my lots' total area - minus the main house + garage - which equates to about a 5,000 sf shed/greenhouse. But, it would have to be 20 ft from the rear property line, instead of 3 ft with my current footprint. I do not need a structure that big, since we already have a 2.5 car garage and 10 x 22 shed, and my gardens would be compromised with that setback. Although, as you most likely know, we never have enough space for our toys :). I like your idea of a high window between the shed and greenhouse - or a half-glass door connecting the two spaces - would be great for light, and/or a transom over the door. I also like the relationship of a potting/garden tool shed - perhaps open to the greenhouse with French doors via a set of steps. Thanks for the ideas.

Evenie, I wish that was my house! Hoovbs too. I would love to put a glass door on it like Muscovy's photo, but the foot print is so tiny (37x69) to the outer walls, I need every square inch for storage. I plan to put in hooks for one of the plastic wheel barrows, it would be all you would see through the glass anyway. I want to be able to hang gloves, paper towers, plastic rack, loppers, clippers etc all on the door so it has to be sound. Unfortunately, the barn wood is not sound and I don't think that OSB will stand up to the use either. It gets super dusty down there so a nice tight seal would be wonderful. I think I will have to use plywood with the barnwood glued to the front. But I will also have to trim to work with hinges and that is where I am at a stand still design wise. I am trying to do it cheap or that would not be as big of a deal. I could use fence pickets and paint them so it does not look so odd with the old and the new. It will tell me what I want. I feel a tad (only a tad) guilty about having two garden sheds. But we have a big garden and one is at the top of the hill and the new is at the bottom. It will help to have less of a walk.

It depends on what you mean with "prickly pear"; some Opuntia should survive, for others it would mean certain death. Some Opuntia can take a lot of cold only if dry, others tolerate water. I have grown cacti and Jovibarba on a balcony similar to yours, and at similar temperatures. I only dared to grow Opuntia fragilis and compressa uncovered, the rest were in a "mini-greenhouse", a small steel frame with a PVC cover, which worked well. On really cold nights I put a blanket over it. The Opuntia looked much better when ovewintered in the mini-greenhouse.

Hello Tin The easiest way to prevent insect damage in your garden is to discourage them from coming in the first place. A healthy garden is the best defense. Pull out any weak plants.They may already be infected. If not, they will attract predators. Pull the plant and dispose of it away from the garden area. Build healthy, organic soil.Natural composting methods, mulching and top-dressing your soil with compost or natural fertilizer is the best way to develop strong, vigorous plants. Keep foliage dry. Water early so foliage will be dry for most of the day. Wet foliage encourages insect and fungal damage to your plants. See our page on drip-irrigation for methods of delivering water to the root systems without wetting the foliage. Disinfect. If you've been working with infested plants, clean your tools before moving on to other garden areas. This will reduce the speed of invading insects. Hope it helps! :)

In the right conditions, and with the right engineering, and architecture, this may be work. The wrong conditions, bad engineering and architecture and it could be a disaster.

With that said and your kitchen on the 2nd floor it may be an ideal place to design additional sq footage for an elevator /dumb waiter type of system to move groceries, etc from the car to the kitchen without messing up the rest of the house. From a safety point of view it would give an escape path if the inside exit from the kitchen area were blocked ie fire.

At picture and topo map of the area would help with getting ideas

In my area we call that a covered deck with storage below. You can get as fancy as you want...

My mom has a storage box on her deck that holds cushions year round and puts a canvas cover over the BBQ. I have a covered deck and grill year round. We got rid of our lawns but used to store the lawn mower in the garage, my neighbor has cute little storage house in the yard for his tools as his garage is taken up by all his kids stuff... lol

Hello Colin,

Has the town or municipality where this home is to be built been determined yet? If it has, you should obtain a copy of their Building Code. The Building Code will contain all sorts of rules that you must comply with, some of which may seem counter-intuitive. Also, do you intend to hire a builder? A good builder is familiar with local building codes and he (or she) can supply guidance on a variety of matters. Selecting exactly where to build your house involves many things.

Why not have an area/room that is inside the house that is only accessible from the 2nd floor balcony.
