What's Better: Two Single Fans or One Double Fan?
Comments (12)It has been my experience in our southeast Texas garden that double fans thrive better than single fans. I've lost quite a few new and pricey single-fan daylilies this year, as they did not seem to have the stored-up energy to survive this most horrendous record-breaking summer here. I really am not interested in buying any more single fans, unless it's a cultivar I just can't live without, no matter what. I've also noticed that double fans attract more bids than singles at the Lily Auction. Yes, some really do go ahead and take off growing, but for the most part, double fans (growing together) do best. It's been my observation, for whatever little it is worth, that daylilies seem to be at their best when they have a little competition. I've noticed that among the 2,000 seedlings I have growing in styrofoam cups this fall, if there is just one seedling in the cup, it does not grow nearly as vigorous as those with 3 or more in the same cup. I also suspect that field-grown daylilies grow better when transplanted than those that are grown in a protected environment (i.e. greenhouse). I think our hot, dry summers may be just too big of a shock for them. It may not make a difference if you live in a better climate. Nancy...See MoreWhich ones do better with more shade?
Comments (9)I think you can plan on all the hostas growing slower in more shade. I don't think there are any that actually prefer that level of dark, other than the spring dessication problem on Frances Williams and the other variegated sieboldianas - and if I were starting out a garden now, I wouldn't bother with any of those plants anyway. There are so many good ones without the worry of that genetic defect. I just looked at an Aurora Borealis that is is deep deep shade - after our cold snap, it is a total wreck... don't know why I don't put it out of its misery. This will be a terrible year for that whole family... So rather than shade tolerance, I'd be looking at a list of the fastest growing hostas, figuring the faster ones will be slower in the shade, but will still be faster than the slower ones in the shade... and I'd look for older, less expensive, tried-and-true varieties in the size and colors you like. Plants that did well in really deep shade - meaning grew faster than average - include Squash Casserole, Abba Dabba Do, Golden Tiara, Paradigm......See MoreWhich one of these sectionals do you like better?
Comments (54)flymom, the color on the fireplace wall is Benjamin Moore's Adagio #1593. I'm so glad you like it. On the strip it appears very gray but on the walls it took on a much bluer cast which we liked. We selected that color from the painting that's on the wall. By the way, I happened to log on to Macy's website last night to see if there were any more reviews of the sectional we're buying, and to my surprise it was marked down an additional $200! So, DH & I are returning to the store today to get a price adjustment. This was just meant to be :-)....See MoreWhich is better? One time close or two closing?
Comments (6)One time close is the only way to go.. We had the choice of going with two closings or one closing (TD Bank vs Wells Fargo).. TD Bank offered the one time close and we jumped on it.. Don't forget.. Two closings leaves greater risk for things to go wrong and usually costs more then single time closing.. Two closings equals two rounds of closing costs.. Also while you may be approved the first time around you run the possiblity of being denied the second time around.. Just imagine.. You have your dream house all financed but during construction your significant other or you yourself lose you job.. Now you go in for second round of approvals and bank denies you OR tell you that you need to put down more money.. You run the risk of losing your house before even moving in.. All in all a single closing is better.. We got ours just at the right time.. Ended up getting fixed rate of 3.375%.....See Morenewhostalady Z6 ON, Canada
