Final Choices for Basement: Rugs, Lighting, Fsbrics!
Comments (25)Oldbat those lamps are spectacular! Unfortunately ours are set in stone, in fact they are sitting in the storage area downstairs....it is like a staging area for a Decorating War :-). However, ours may have a bit more style than I originally thought because instead of the arm going up, on this one the arm goes down and the drum shade is suspended over the table from the arm instead of being held up over it, if that makes any sense. I am hoping these do install the way I've described, not as the picture. They were very pricey though, so I can only imagine what those fab things in your photo cost! I am also loving the mini mattress for the pups. I had wanted to do built in beds on either side of the fireplace but got built in end tables instead. Arapaho, I have also loved that carpet for years. I found out yesterday it is actually made by Helios and is private labeled by Karastan. The more I find out about this stuff the more i realize how easy it is to overpay as a retail customer. Thank you, WMA. I appreciate that. Our basement was fairly typical and served a useful purpose for many years. I am excited to be stepping it up a notch! Whoa, oldpbat--- just looked at the site and your lamps are from the same place mine are, and are actually less expensive. I am going to send the photo to him, thank you! Comments (19)OH I am not at all against fans. LOL One house we put one in every room and TWO in the kitchen. The only rooms missing ceiling fans was laundry and bathroom. Neither had room for one as they were too small. We had the manufactures home builder add the wiring for two ceiling fans one in living room and one in our bedroom. I can always change the chandy in the dinning room for another fan but it is the ONE light fixture my husband likes so it will stay. What I did do was buy two ceiling fans that matched the light fixtures that came with the house. AND THEN I got rid of all but two of them ROFLMBO. Well it is fine I have four lights kind of in a row that all match or are same glass in the shades. The light over the kitchen sink was not good for me and I found the one we have now at the DUMP. I love it and have never seen one with a downward facing light like this one has. You can turn one or the other lights on or both at the same time and that is the way I leave it. I have a crystal chandy in my studio because it has wonderful light. And three task lights one on glass cutting table one at grinder and one on my desk. And an antique light similar to the kitchen light in my sewing room. Yep I would say I am a person of lights. Here is a link that might be useful: And wow my kitchen was boring then. We had just moved in a few months before....See MoreNeed help finalizing Conestoga kitchen design and cabinet color choice
Comments (7)Hi everyone! It's great to get input from the Houzz community. My husband was active duty AF for 27 years and we're finally making this house our own. Thanks so much for the great feedback particularly from @damiarain and @caligirl5. Also, I am working with a KD. I’m so grateful that you both took time to give in-depth suggestions and actually provide a revised layout. In response to your suggestions: - Fridge - Damiarain, IMO, Moving the fridge to the wall proposed on the end of the counter would make it stick out too much and the sides would show whereas one side is hidden by the stub wall now. We considered removing the stub wall but it’s pretty involved so we opted to take down the pantry only. Furthermore, as shown in the 1st and 2nd pics, the great room is across from the kitchen and I personally prefer the look of cabinets on that wall complemented by a new staircase and not a fridge protruding out. Also, the space isn’t very wide in the entryway and an open fridge would definitely block someone’s path into the kitchen from the great room if placed in the end. It might work in the center of the wall, however. - Damiarain, you said, “have upper cabinets only on either the wall next to the pantry or next to the fridge.” What would I do with the entire open space where the fridge presently is…that’s losing 83” on the fridge wall? Besides, I need the extra storage for all the stuff I've gathered at our various assignments. - I understand your suggestion about moving the range and it’s valid. The wall is 154” and we’re cutting down the width of the new pantry to 31” whereas the current pantry opening is 44 ½”. I’ll have to talk to my KD about the lack of sufficient prep space on the left. You’d think that would be a major consideration in presenting her design. However, I am installing a counter level bar which will give me lots of space to the left of the sink (above the dishwasher) yet it doesn’t resolve the issue of someone washing dishes and another cooking on the range. I don’t know what the answer is but there has to be one. - Good point about leaving breathing room around the hood and going with more drawers whenever possible. - @caligirl5…I have the sample block for antique white but it doen’t work well for my house. We live in Florida and have lots of windows so I need a more contemporary look although I don’t want bright white. I’m now thinking gray may be the answer since all the other whites may clash with my bright white crown molding. - Sorry about the dimensions and thanks for your recommended layout. I have a thing about storage and have lots of dishes/glasses so I don’t know about getting rid of the cabinets on the fridge wall entirely and putting. Furthermore, as stated previously, I’m concerned that a large full depth fridge on that wall may really be in the way vs. being tucked where it is now. - A previous design had the microwave across from the range in a drawer pretty much where the cooktop is now. I opted to put the microwave in the pantry and put large drawers there instead. I've attached pics of a new design keeping the same footprint with ceiling height cabinets and a picture of the torn down stair taken from my great room. I will definitely give all of your recommendations more consideration and I’m really thankful for the help....See MoreHelp Finalize paint color for a new build, for whole House
Comments (4)There are actually 117 things that I consider when doing a custom color consult for one room. You’re doing a whole house, with far more variables. You have already made a lot of permanent decisions that may, or may not, work with a single color. You’re actually asking a lot of one paint color here, unless you had it in mind all along with the rest of the selections.A single paint color won’t weave disparate elements together into a whole cloth. Most likely, a coordinated whole palette that has different major and minor colors for the home as a whole will be the solution. That may or may not include a single paint color for the whole. I’d suggest working with a designer for a color consult. Youneill need samples of everything you r chosen so far for permanent finishes, to start with. Then you’ll get into lighting, which ways the windows face, the views from outside to inside and inside to outside. And all the rest of the 117 points, magnified by X. Good luck!...See MoreEmmaNJ
