My maple tree leaves have these red / brown dots.

What are they?

What do I do about them?

Those are leaf galls. They are abnormal growths that form typically from some sort of insect irritation (but can also be bacterial or viral). While unsightly, they are harmless.

You can't prevent them from occurring and they will remain present until the leaves drop in fall.

"Galls on maples appear sporadically and do mostly cosmetic damage. The threat to the health of the tree is negligible or limited. Treatment is rarely justified. Because eriophyid gall mites crawl to the bark to spend the winter, trees could then be sprayed to suppress the mites there. By waiting until the leaves have fallen, it is easier to cover the bark thoroughly and much less pesticide will be needed."

I have a maple tree in my yard for over 30 years now and my maple tree also has brown leaves this Spring 2010. It's so strange. I never noticed that it did this before. I have noticed some other maple trees with brown leaves in other neighborhoods, too. Yet, other trees around them are green. So, something is happening that is making them brown. I don't know what type of maple my tree is, I thought it was a black maple. You said yours is a Norway Maple and it has the brown leaves. I wish I knew what has caused these trees to do this, this Spring. I can't find any answers on the internet.

It is possible that the tree has an infestation of an insect called scale. Scale suck the jucies from the leaves, and by doing so remove the chlorophyl leaving small round yellow "halo" shaped spots. Scale infestations can easily cause leafdrop in citrus. Look for small round scab like insects on the top or bottom of the problem leaves. However, as you have been growing this tree for fifteen years, you probably are already well versed concerning scale. - Millet

If you had verticillium wilt, you would know it!! There is no mistaking the very rapid effect of that pathogen. Red maples (Acer rubrum), which is what you have, are very tolerant of a wide range of soil pH, more so than any other maple species. Your soils must be quite alkaline to result in that degree of chlorosis. You can address with a chelated iron product but that is only a temporary fix. Adjusting a high pH soil is a difficult thing to accomplish.

If a plant breeder marketed a Maple with pretty pink bobbles I’m sure people would rush out and buy it. I wouldn’t waste time or money trying to get rid of the galls.
