Some FFE's, Multiples and Clumps

It's so much cooler today, and I'm loving spending time in the garden because of it!

No Tomorrow has its first flower ever today, and it was gorgeous. The first bloom is a 7 incher! This is one I got a year ago in April.

Return to Camelot - The first few blooms on this one looked brown, and I was about ready to toss it. But after some rain and cooler temps it's looking presentable. I also got this one a year ago in April.

Moon Shimmers FFE - Yet another one I got a year ago in April that is blooming now for the first time.

Porterhouse - People were commenting on the photo I posted a few days ago, and I didn't think that was particularly good bloom. Here are a couple of shots from yesterday.

Blood of the Martyrs - Please excuse the tall Bermuda grass in the background. I haven't been weed eating during the heatwave.

Debra I love Moon Shimmers! What a glorious edge…..it is different from what I see in my gardens so it caught my attention right away. Such scrumptious color on No Tomorrow. You definitely added some beauties last season.

Mantis and Nancy - The Sun Bear X Julie Newmar seedling may be an intro, or may be sold as a seedling in the future. It's the one I call "The Thing That Ate the Seedling Bed" and multiplies like bunnies (at 19 fans now). It's dormant, has 32-inch scapes with a 6.5 inch flower and has always rebloomed. I hesitate to introduce it because it does not have teeth all around the bloom and sometimes looks brown at the end of scorching days in the mid 90s. It is an incredible pod parent that sets seed in high temperatures, so it would be valuable in hybridizing for teeth. Maryl - The sepals on Astral Voyager quill about 85 percent of the time here. It has excellent plant habits too. It hasn't gotten any supplemental watering and doesn't get enough sun now, so the flower color is lighter than in past seasons. Debra

Sherry - The near white seedling is a pretty one, but it doesn't get more than 10-11 buds in recent years. I lined some out in a different part of the yard to see if those divisions would improve. So far they're not doing any better than the main clump. When it was in the old seedling bed (before it got shady), some scapes got 18 and 19 buds. That soil there must be really great. I wish I could cut down all the neighbor's trees and go back to using that seedling bed. LOL Debra

Sour Puss this year has eaten up most of my "film" it's been so pretty, but next to that is Pink Aloha. I adore this flower when she gets it right - and mostly she does. I call her a she because she does go her own way as you described.....Kindred Jewel is my WOW one of this group. I hope this makes it long term for you...........I saw Elizabeth Hewitt in the Blueridge line up and thought how pretty it was. See how colorfast it is if you get a chance.............Isn't it nice when people tell you how much they enjoy your garden. I just have a small display anymore, but people still will stop my DH if he's out in the yard and compliment him on it. He smiles and nods with smug satisfaction. Outside of tote that barge and lift that bale (much appreciated of course), he has zero to do with it. As we say down south "Bless his little heart" lol...............Maryl

Thank you all for looking and your kind comments. Kate, I am just tickled with Lady dragon. I do like it so much, so glad you enabled me with that one. Debra, I have Kate to thanks for Great Balls of fire. It is such a pretty intense red, and gold edges set it off. of course you all know Clown Parade is always a favorite and Nancy,little Light o0f Mine has been blooming in a clump for a week and that one is probably not the largest clump. I have divided it several times, It is just happy where it is. Maryl, Navajo pony isa pretty one. Kate and I got that bug at the same time, I think. Thank you, Julia...High praise. kay

I see that No Tomorrow has Palace Garden Beauty as a parent. I have always liked that one, and progeny that are slightly larger would be appealing.

Mantis - Palace Garden Beauty is actually a grandparent of No Tomorrow. No Tomorrow's parent is Henrietta McIntyre, which is out of Palace G. B. and Bella Sera. I'm still very fond of PGB.

Brad - Fighting Fire is always one of my favorites, but neither clump of mine is doing very well this year. I haven't watered them, and one of the clumps hasn't even scaped. The other has very short scapes and the heat has done a number on the foliage. The flowers are still pretty though. Judy's Jewel finally multiplied a bit, and it is having a pretty good season since it's close to the hose pipe.

Sherry - That edge on Moon Shimmers is a pretty thing. I bought it because of the edge to use in hybridizing. No Tomorrow really wowed me when I saw it this morning. It's even prettier - and bluer - in person.

No Tomorrow is just beautiful! I like the bright I Lava You. Princess Diary is pretty but I prefer Judy's Jewel There isn't anything i don't like about it and Porterhouse is a lovely red. Blood of the Martyrs is lovely and Fighting Fire trio is always a favorite. Lovely post, Debra.

Is Princess Diary a newer one for you? If not, how has it performed over the years (multiplicaiton, scape height, bud count, etc.)? I sent you a message, but not sure you are set up anymore.

Porterhouse is a pretty color. I like the form on the 2nd Shot more with it's petals less curved back, but it's striking either way............ You know I like the edge on Moon Shimmers. I'd be happy with that one.....................Maryl

I still like Porterhouse. Good form and color. Judy's Jewel also looks good in a clump. Is it bud top heavy?

No Tomorrow is a pretty thing. Glad you kept Return to Camelot. It’s got a lot of stuff going on with it. Gorgeous clump of Princess Diary and Judy’s Jewel is shining in that clump.

Mantis - I've had Princess Diary for four bloom seasons now. It is an evergreen, so I don't know how it would do farther north. It's never been the registered 30 inches tall here. I usually get scapes that are 26-28 inches tall. It multiplies OK. adding a couple of fans every year. It certainly has never had anything near the registered bud count here. Bud count is usually 12-13 per scape, maybe higher last year. I think it's rebloomed twice in the years I've had it.

Julia - Judy's Jewel is top budded, but I wouldn't call it heavy.

Kate - Return to Camelot is still on the possible cut list. It was looking brown by afternoon today when the high temp was 88.

Maryl - I'm glad you like Porterhouse. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I prefer the look in the first shot.

My picks today are Judy's Jewel (what a lovely pink) and Return to Camelot (love the dark color around the eye).

Nan - I'm glad to have finally gotten some increase on Judy's Jewel. Even though I applied Grub Gone to it in Fall and Spring, the new fans did not produce fans. If I can ever grubs to stop eating it, JJ might flourish. Return to Camelot has a tan base, so I won't hybridize with it, even though it has that dark purpe outlining the eye. It's still on the move-out list after turning brown yesterday in the afternoon.
