Protecting outdoor string light in the rain

Hello - I have looked and can't find a product or hack to solve this problem. I have outdoor electrical string lights hanging on my pergola. They connect to power via an outdoor rated extension cord. I only use the extension cord when I want the lights on. The rest of the time (during the day, when lights are not in use) the male end of the string lights is exposed to the elements. Right now I have the male end wrapped in plastic and water is not seeping in, but every time I want to turn on the lights I have to take off the plastic and then reattach when I am finished. Is there any kind of device or easy hack anyone recommends for waterproofing the male end of the string lights when not in use? Thank you!

Have you thought about a smart plug? You can plug the smart plug into the electric outlet and the string lights into the smart plug. You can then leave the lights plugged in all the time and turn them on and off with your phone. We have this set up for our screened in porch and the area over our hot tub.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like a nice set up - but I don't want them plugged in all the time. I just need to figure out a way to protect the exposed male end of the string lights when not plugged in.

Quick tutorial: Most commercial potting media support several inches of excess water at the pot's bottom. This is water that will not drain by the force of gravity alone because the sum of water's tendency to stick to itself and to soil particles is greater than the force of gravity. This is the water you need to be very concerned about. In the images, the shaded area represents excess (perched) water, which will be the same ht in any container for any given medium. Note how much water can be expelled from the container by tipping the pot (see B) or using ballast (see D). It's too late for ballast, since the planting is already established, but ballast can eliminate 95% or more of excess water in any medium. You can also use a wick to drain a significant amount of excess water from plantings for which a water-retentive medium has been used. When using a wick, the best location for the drain hole is through the bottom of the pot where it meets the sidewall. Combine it with tipping with the drain hole at the lowest point for best results. I use a strand from a rayon mop as my wicks. The only way to stop water from entering a pot when it's raining is to use some type of mechanism to ensure no rain falls on the plant or soil. So providing some form of cover (garage or enclosed porch, e.g.) or providing a makeshift canopy/umbrella would be the direction your thinking might take if you don't care to use the methods I described. What gets me is so many experts say many of those orchids dont grow in the bay area..and i wasted time believing them until i put them outdoors and they did fine. Stanhopea is one and a beautiful Dendrobium is another, that has lime green glossy and highly segmented plump stems-it looks exotic out of bloom is another thing i like about it.In 2006 it bloomed twice in one year outdoors. Right now a Masdavallia is in bloom,a red-orange type.Laelia's lived years. A Oncidium that is a little on the rare side with a bloom that looks like a wasp to me but is called a butterfly orchid(the name i have someplace!) so far is growing slowly but truly on a piece of tree fern trunk. An Angrecum spends most of the year outdoors-i did bring it in last year in January-back out in late February. The "DARWIN" Orchid. So ,bay areans use that list posted by the SB society as a good guide-those orchids will do far better on your porch or covered patio then indoors. Especially when they are finished blooming and you dont know where to put them in the house.

Thank you for your responses; sorry I was so long in getting back to you. I believe the Aloe I have is the Aloe Barbadensis from the pictures I see on the web. I am trying to control my psoriasis with natural remedies rather than medical remedies. All the doctors have to suggest is to use steroid creams for the rest of your life. If you read up on steroid creams you'll say no thank you. I know using alternative remedies isn't proven by the medical field (I am a nurse) but many people have found alternative remedies to help them. I have purchased Aloe Vera from the stores, but from the reading I have done (and I have done a ton) the recommendation is to use the gel from the plant itself. I am still needing advice on how to keep this alive over the cold wet winter. Thanks Ginny

Well, lights are certified for safety for their use. If an electrical outlet is not waterproof, rain could cause havoc and possible shorts. I'd go with Outdoor lights. Be sure they are UL or CSA certified. There are safety standards set for those lights, and those two companies are agencies that certify to the standards. They put them through rain and wind tests. There may be other agencies also, but make sure they are certified for outdoor use.

Why are you worried about the male end of the string lights being exposed to rain? Without the male end plugged in, there's no electricity involved.

The prongs are typically made of brass or nickel-plated brass. Brass is used in bathroom plumbing and in marine applications because it doesn't rust...it has little or no iron in it. Over time brass can tarnish a bit, but that shouldn't be an issue. I suggest you just let it be, and see if anything happens that looks concerning. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

My main concern would be if it was plugged in to power in an exposed location and a rainstorm happened: water could short out the connection where it was plugged in to the extension cord.

There are little plastic “enclosures” for just this thing - they snap open/closed. I can’t remember where I saw them - HD or Ace…
