The "right style" is going to be a style that you like. Do you have any favorites? For example, I am very fond of shaker-inspired, and also vintage Duncan Phyffe - both of which might work in a cottage-y space.

See if a pic will post. I can tell you the eating area in our kitchen is 12X12 and we have a 40” round table. That works nicely with our configuration, but I realize that can differ. I wouldn’t want our table any larger when factoring in needed space for chairs and foot traffic.

As to shape it really depends on what you mean by small. If it is a small square space then a round table works well especially because round tables generally have a center instead of legs and so it is easier to "squeeze" a few more people around the table especially if you use smaller folding chairs for extras.

I have a small dining area but mine is more rectangular in shape instead of square so a round wouldn't work well becaue it would be too wide. I opted for what is called a racetrack shape which is essentially a long oval. I normall have four dining chairs but in a pinch I have seated additional people using folding chairs I keep in a closet.

Jackie, I meant what style are your other pieces? Early American, Shaker, modern, transitional, vintage, 1920s, and so forth...

My living room and kitchen are a combo room

It seems like you might need a square table…or slightly oblong …so it can be pushed up against the wall…with chairs or stools next to the wall on each side…almost like a peninsula…it looks like the only way to be able to keep the walk ways open and get as much tabletop as possible

The 5 1/2’ x 6’ space you mentioned is tight. Something small and narrow (oval or rectangular) might work best where the chairs, as you mentioned, can scoot all the way in when not in use. Ideally, it’s nice to have at least 36” from the table edge to the wall or furniture for the chairs. I know that’s not always possible.

Round counter heighth is my preference but so far I not been able to find a counter heighth table that allows you to push chairs up close to the table

It will be difficult to find a traditional round table that will fit both table and chairs in that space, I think. A 3'7" diameter table - which is considered fairly small - would barely allow people to sit at the table. But, a "pub" table is smaller, and is usually bar height (and less expensive sets, also.) Hopefully you aren't needing to seat more than 2 or 3. Try searching that term on google, you should have examples come up from Ashley, Overstock, Amazon, Walmart etc - both rectangular and round.

Your other furniture & room elements are a mix of modern, and more vintage looks (like the ceiling fan, floor lamp, little table and newell posts), so I would look for a set that is simple clean lines.

I love the blue on your walls - a multi colored with blue print would be so pretty in that TV alcove!
