Cedar Rust on my Apple Tree?

last year

Hello, is this cedar rust on my newly planted apple tree? there is a cedar in the area but i only planted the tree one month ago, so i am guessing the tree already had this? any suggestions what to do? is the apple tree alrrady lost and i should dig it up?

The tree looks like an older Eastern Red Cedar (Juniper Virginiana. That said, Cedar Apple Rust is not really harmful to the tree other than the small portion it infects. These are host trees to just part of its life cycle. Now if you or your neighbors have any apple trees, crabs, or hawthorn trees, it will infect those trees and can cause serious problems or even death to them if left untreated. Generally speaking, you do not want to have any junipers (cedars) within 1/2 to 2 mile radius of an apple orchard, or ideal even just a lone apple, crab or hawthorn tree. So the answer to your question is no, it is not going to really harm no kill your cedar. One the galls are done producing spores, they die and fall off of the tree the next year. For the life cycle to be completed there must also be apple, crab or hawthorn trees near by, as the next of the two cycle stage is on those trees and not the cedars. Breaking that cycle is the best way to stop the disease.

Yes, it is still safe to eat the apples; the fruit may or may not actually develop blemishes but if so they can be safely cut out like any other blemish. Cedar Apple Rust will decrease the vigor of your trees and may eventually kill them, generally reducing and possibly disfiguring the crop along the way. As you are finding out though, different apple trees have different degrees of susceptibility. You may very well already have resistant trees, if they never develop the symptoms.

It's not cedar-apple rust. Looks more like scab, a fungal issue than can affect both apples and pears although many disease resistant varieties available. I'd take samples of the affected leaves into your local extension office for an accurate diagnosis and the best methods to treat this problem in your area - appropriate treatment and timing can vary by location and I have no idea how prevalent this may be in FL or what they recommend. FWIW, scab does not necessarily require treatment. It depends quite a lot on how severe the disease is and how much leaf loss occurs as a result. My favorite apple variety - Gravenstein - is extremely prone to scab, yet I grew it for years and never, ever sprayed. It lost some leaves during the season but nothing drastic and scab seldom does anything more than blemish the appearance of the fruit - it remains totally edible. So spraying fruit trees is NOT a requirement if you are able to tolerate less than pristine looking trees and fruit.

That's what I thought but I wanted confirmation from another person since I haven't had an apple tree before. My mom and dad did - I think my dad sprayed it every spring (with something) - at least all the years we got nice apples!

The yellow speckles on the leaves do look like cedar rust but it's not too serious at this point. I've not heard of an apple tree being already infected or carrying it over from a previous infection. On my trees it's a seasonal thing, unfortunately I'm surrounded by many cedar trees so they never get a break.

@vgkg Z-7 Va thank you! can you recommend a treatment for my tree to protect it? a funcicide? do your trees grow ok near thr cedar? its the same for me, my neighvor has several cedars so not much i can do

I believe that there is a remedy that orchard growing use but I'm not familiar with it since I only use just 1 dormant oil spray application in late winter for all my trees (not effective for BF). I will still get some apples if the squirrels feel generous but it's rarely more than a dozen or so and they are not of the best quality. For some years the trees are almost completely defoliated and lose all of their leaves before any fruit gets close to being ripe. It's an apple tree mess here, way too many cedar trees surround my property, some within 200'.
