Those 'Others' who share my world
Comments (7)When you are really attuned to nature, you can see so many things..big and little. I feed the raccoons so know they eat first, right when the sun goes down and then they make a tour of the property. Last night they took their coffee can full of cat food with them and dropped it right by the bird feeder when they climbed up to get the sunflower seeds. Greedy little buggers. We have big old toad who by day stays in one of the 12 terra cotta flower pots of geraniums lining my stairs. Trouble is,I forget about him from time to time and water his head. We have a wren who is nesting somewhere in our garage but I haven't a clue where the nest is. I always lock up the garage at night so the raccoons will stay out of there. My greenhouse is attached to the garage and right as rain every morning Ms. wren is in there yelling at me to let her out which of course I do. Ever try to argue with a wren? It's a lost cause. I could go on forever about the 2 red tailed hawks who are in our yard every day,the red fox who darts through the woods but is pretty elusive, and the roughly 25 wild turkeys who tromp through here every morning around 7. I am so used to all the critter noises that when I hear a new one my ears always perk up. A family whose property borders on the same woods as ours has started raising alpacas and they make the funniest little noises. Kind of neat....See MoreDiscussion On Those Rare Vulc. Seedlings
Comments (39)It appears I'm a few months late for this discussion. Well I did have one of the Zunac seedlings, but unfortunately she expired over the winter, along with a number of my larger sangs:( I lost my job in August of last year & was thus unable to get the greenhouse built in time & had to overwinter them under less than ideal circumstances. I'm afraid they just couldn't handle the stress. The real bummer was that the Zunac as well as all of the sangs were definitely budding last fall, but they all ended up getting a little frost-bit which ended that & may have contributed to their eventual demise although they did all spring back at the time. I have just received some vulc hybrid seeds & so I will be starting over again & hope to be able to replace the Zunac sometime in the future....See MoreWho else wishes they had a pond?
Comments (31)I've had two pondes and love them! Well worth the money and work! So much of it can be done yourself with scrounged materials, cheaply. And a small yard is no excuse for not having one. I'll let you in on a little secret...grass is useless. It has absolutely no purpose and uses up a lot of water and chemicals to look nice. So, why have any? Make paths throughout the yard with woodchips or shavings, etc. and make the rest of the space into garden/ponds. Maybe a little bridge over the stream between the two small ponds. Old carpet makes great under liner. Small barrels and rubermaid storage containers make great filters. Lavarock from Walmart is a the best filter media, too. So are sponges without soap, plastic dish scrubbies wihtout soap, plastic bath scrubbies without soap, and sand with small gravel. An out-of-pond filter is really the only kind that works. Pre pump, in-the-pond filters don't really clean the water, just protect the pump. You'll need a small part of the pond deep enough to be below the frost line if you want to keep fish in it all wanter. Here in Barrie/Toronto area, that's about 4' deep. But it can be just a small section in the center of the pond. The fish hibernate under the ice in the winter. You may also need a way to keep a hole in the ice all winter, if you want to keep fancy Koi. However, goldfish are a lot less sensitive to that kind of thing than Koi. It's not necessary to spend money on fancy "pond" plants. Lots of garden plants will love growing in the pond. One such is impatients. They love to be free root (without dirt) in the water and they'll never wilt in the heat with their feet in water. Ribbon grass likes the pond too, so do canna lilies (both potted in soil with the pot in the pond)also ellphant ears, monarda, creeping jenny and watercress (which can be bought in pieces from the grocery store and rooted. It's a perennial and will come back in the pond every year.) - and peace lilies and pothos from inside the house. Ponds are so much fun and fish are great pets! Mine were trained to eat from my hands and came looking for food every time they heard my voice. I'd have to shoo them away to move the pots around and work in the pond, little beggers! They know your voice and will hide if anyone else speaks. Even a tiny container pond is worth the effort. LOL! There's no mosquitoes in a pond with fish. Goldifsh eat eveything that moves. I regularly threw the slugs and earwings in the pond and they were snapped up before they got down 2". They fought over the worms....See MoreOur trip across the pond
Comments (23)Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. I wanted to explore more cooking and food shops/stores but didnt get to. Terri, here is more a link to Pictures of England, a website pointed out to me by Denise. I started it on Bourton on the Water, where we stayed for a few days. Thanks Sharon, I was actually thinking how can I even come close to posting her quality of travel guides, I dont do the pictures she does LOL. We might have sat at the same table in the Cheshire Cheeses dining room! Sawdust still there, but we didnt make it to the cellar. I missed a lot of the British Museum. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Kathleen, DH says he took an average of 200 pictures a day. Yup. Me, I just buy the post cards or Google the images, same thing (DARFC from the photo bugs here) Cathy, thanks for giving me the War and Peace moniker heh heh. Next time I go with CF friends! LindaC, I know. Im still exhausted. Speaking of the V&A, did you know there was a Dale Chihuly chandelier in the entrance room?...See MoreKswl
