What’s in my wall?

I have a 1920 bungalow that has stairs up to the attic. The stairs going up are in my living room and are above the stairs that lead down to the basement. There is a bump-out that starts at the basement stairs and goes up to the attic stairs. It doesn’t reach the basement floor or the attic ceiling, and I’m wondering what it’s for. I’m really whether I could take it out to make the attic stairs wider at the point of the turn.
