Oh my, that's a harsh and unreasonable reaction. Also an ill-informed one. I did a search and found guidance from the VA for flag etiquette for today is as follows:

"On Memorial Day the flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon only, then raised briskly to the top of the staff until sunset, in honor of the nation’s battle heroes."

Assuming that few flag flying structures paid their staff to post flags at half-staff at sunrise, raise them higher at noon, and then down at sunset, probably no one got it fully correct.

As for suggesting calling to complain, would you have expected that buildings would deny employees' observance of a federal day off for the non-essential task of answering a phone for a closed office?

Despite it being Memorial Day, flags on gov't buildings here have been flying at half staff for the children murdered in Texas. I thought that's what the OP referenced, not Memorial Day.

oly, I thought so too (and still think so), but maybe didn't account for it being Memorial Day. And now we've all learned something new, I'm guessing. I didn't know about the flag lowering and raising on Memorial Day until now. Thank you for the information elmer.

I found out that flags on federal facilities were ordered to be half staff in honor of the Uvalde victims only until Saturday, May 28.

That thought occurred to me in part too - the recognition period for a death or tragic event never continues for all that long. It makes sense that the federal period would end on a weekend - need to keep instructions simple and easy to follow for the civil servants responsible for carrying out the policy. ;-) , Also, it was perhaps ended when it was so as not to interfere with the specific flag flying procedure for the Memorial Day, to the extent the practice is followed on federal buildings.

I wasn't out and about much yesterday but I did notice that a few houses in my neighborhood had flags in brackets on display for the holiday. And as with others, with the flags secured at the end of their supporting rods so not "half-mast".. Flag displays on homes seems to be a waning practice, it's certainly not something we've ever done.

Flags fly at my house for federal observances. The US government funded my household during my upbringing, and so I am a showing my gratitude. We spent our Memorial Day commemorating those who weren't fortunate to make it, and celebrating some who miraculously did. We talked about Daddy's time overseas and how he debriefed POWs and those who survived, Douglas Hegdahl, and others (more personal). Blind patriotism isn't a good thing, but patriotism can be ok sometimes.

The police union building would not be a federal building, I expect. I don’t know how thqt changes their folloiwing of codes and gudelines.

Our porch post had a flagpole when we moved in, and we flew our flag, but then it started pulling out of the post and we never repaired and replaced it. My dad’s house has a flagpole! We used to fly flags from it, and there are several in the closet (a gorgeous wool flag with 48 embroidered stars, and a Bennington Flag he got for the Bicentennial).

You’re right, elmer, flying the flag isn’t as common a practice now. Among younger generations around me, and by that I mean younger than ”the greatest generation”, it seems to be the very conservative households who fly the flag, especially on a daily basis.

Among the flag code, which is not law of course, is the reminder that the field of blue should always be in the upper left corner. So if the flag is to be displayed vertically, you don’t just rotate it clockwise, you also should then ”flip” it right to left, to keep the field on the left.

Uh, I am a moderate, and certainly not of the extreme right leanings. And I am most certainly not a boomer. I know plenty of young people who fly flags. Matter of fact, I had to move my Progression flag to put the US flag out.

I'm a military veteran with no particular sentimentality about my service or anyone else's and I've never felt motivated to put out a flag. I respect those who feel and act differently about it.

As rob suggests, some do so slavishly and blindly and as if doing so demonstrates some kind of moral superiority. Which, of course, it doesn't.

Our neighbor has 4 flags on posts along a fence. And I can't get over the carelessness. My father was a very proud Army man, and drilled all the rules into us. The neighbor's flags are up 24/7 all year round, and get very tattered. Drives me crazy

P.S. I work for municipal gov't, and we follow federal guidelines, but all our sites were closed yesterday. Police here are also municipal employees, so the stations presumably follow the same rules. The union is not part of the gov't tho.

I guess I would hope the police union would know if flags were lowered in honor of those murdered children and would follow suit. So hoping it wasn’t a blatant display of support for the police involved. A call to them would clarify.

Flying a flag, home flag poles are very common here...as in at least two per neighborhood. Especially now that we have hit Memorial day as Flag Day then the 4th of July shortly there after. A few years ago we had a brewery open and they had a flag hung against a wall. WE had to have them turn it around--being a Chief Master Scout for several years Flag etiquette is very important to him. That and in the homes his parents built the first accoutrement for every yard was a Flag pole. Last year a neighbor came around and put flags on all the Fire number poles we each have in your front yards. I've flown one for years atop it...we really need to remember how BLESSED we are to be born in this country!

Anyone interested in making a bet on how that resolution's longevity may compare to those made at New Year?
