Grow Lights for Japanese Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta)

Hi. I'm new to this forum. I recently purchased a Japanese Sago Palm. Our home faces north and the palm is on the south side but gets very little light due to a screened in porch behind it (I want to keep the palm inside the house). But I gave it a shot. The palm is now putting out these abnormally long new shoots that appear to be indicative of too little light. A friend suggested I try grow lights. I hate the way the ones on Amazon look (for a living room). There is a recessed light above the plant (but it's 10 feet up). Is there a modern grow light option that would work for me? Thanks in advance.

Amazon has quite a variety of light styles, some more outlandish than others. But your recessed light might be the way to go. Simply look at increasing the light output of your recessed light. The 10 feet thing shouldn't be a problem. Our Sun seems to "make do" from 93 million miles away. Auto headlights can go well over 100 feet.

You don't want to install a recessed bulb that would get hot enough to be a fire hazard. A local lighting place might be able to advise you on a higher light output bulb for your recessed light. From the standpoint of insurance, It might be better to have one of their experts do the recessed bulb upgrade installation.

Why did the leaves all die? It was probably lack of water. If that is the case all is not lost. I would water the tree thoroughly and set it aside in a place where it doesn't get more that 3-5 hrs. of sun a day and give it a rest. Mist the stump daily but don't soak the soil, just keep it damp. If the tree is alive it should start to sprout new leaves in a couple of months. In any case I would keep trying for at least six months before I declared it dead. If the top collapses and falls apart it is dead for sure.

I assume you are talking about those poor trees in small pots with glued rocks on them sold as "bonsai"? I despise those things. Infact just last week a bought an adenium(desert rose) that was in that situation. Sometimes, and dont tell the stores, Ill break the glued rocks so at least the poor plants can get some water and air. My guess in combination with lack of sun is that it has some root rot. Its probably in a very moisture retentive soil so I would re-pot into some quick draining mix. Plain miracle grow despite their claims holds water too long unless you add a ton of perlite or something similar. There are many soil recipes in the container forum that can help you out. I could have snapped a pic, but I'm 90 miles from home today, maybe when I get back? Yes, I'm sure it's not the biggest I've seen, but still, it's a good one, vigorous, trunk diameter is at least 14". But, it's growing on the side of a hill, under a canopy from an oak and it doesn't get the direct sun they like. Therefore, I only get the long pollinating thingie followed by a single flush every year. The tallest, largest sago I can ever remember seeing is in Honolulu, Waikiki right in front of the Red Lobster Restaurant. It's in the middle of town, not hard to find and worth checking out. Chadec, cycads really grow in bursts then do nothing for a year. I know that Floridians may get two bursts per year but I usually get one--but the plant may sent out over a dozen new leaves in a matter of a few weeks. How are you growing your Sagos?--Ground or container? (If in a container, I assume it is outside now.) If yours has been sitting dormant for over a year, I would consider container size, fertilizing, sun levels or soil issues. Palms are like cycads in requiring excellent drainage--hard to over water them in the heat of summer--but I understand they like more spacious pots than palms--that being the case it's imperative that your soil mix offers excellent drainage (more so than with even palms). Hi Mickala,

You could unscrew the existing recessed bulb to see what the replacement should look like. Turn the wall switch to OFF before doing that. The bulb should have a watts rating on it, and you need to go higher than that to get higher light output.
