How can I make this look better?
Comments (8)I like the idea of removing all the plants laying gravel or pavers, I was thinking that would probably be the best way to control the weeds. The fountain needs a new pump but will work just fine once it has one, I was thinking I might wait on that until I get the dirt covered. I'll have to move the fountain out of the way to do that and was wondering if it might be better placed somewhere else? There is an entrance hatch to the underfloor of the house right next to the fountain, it's kind of an eyesore but needs to remain accessible. I was thinking of getting a wrought iron table that would straddle it to make it less obvious. I was also thinking of getting a nice looking rain barrel to put at the end with the gutter. I want to strike a balance between busyness and barrenness, I'd like the fountain to be the focus without it sitting alone on a gray stretch of rock. I'm also wondering about the heights of things, should I look for some of those iron plant stands so that the fountain is not so much taller than everything else? Hostas aren't very well suited to my climate, we have to conserve water so I try to limit my 'heavy drinkers' to things that I can't live without - like veggies and roses. I'm thinking that Spider Plants will do well there, they don't mind the shade and are fine with minimal watering. I have some in a similar spot and they are happy and sending out lots of little babies, so maybe I'll just take some cuttings and see how they do. Thanks for the suggestions, please give more : )...See MoreHelp! How can I make my new couch look better??
Comments (44)I like the sofa but it needs space.....consider emptying the room of anything on wall, table, or mantle so it is basiccally empty, and place items removed on dining room table for future reference. Put the sofa on any wall where it has room for end tables. Put the chair where it can have a conversation with the sofa. At this point I would redo the curtains to coordinate with the wall and do them in a linen type weave. Remove the crystal chandelier and replace with something simple and maybe oil rubbed bronze. Go shopping for a large piece picture in a simple or frameless style that blends with the plaid pillow; take the pillow with you if necessary. So far so good. If you have end tables and a cocktail table put them in the room only if you like them. If they are wood that should be fine. Send us a picture of the whole room taken from another room so we can see the size etc of the room. I am showing this inspiration room because it is very simple with very trad furniture, but the mantle is very low key and would work nicely in your living room style I think. Also note the colorful throw on the arm chair. This is same room, but wood tables and metal cocktail table, simple window treatments in tones found in living room, and antique armoire that is similar to your Moms tallish piece by fireplace. TV opposite sofa and easy chair for great viewing This looks great; metal table, magazine rack in oil rubbed bronze, brass Pharmacy lamp for reading. Would work next to Mom's chair......these items can be found on line at Ballard Design and other places too; overstock.com, wayfair.com with great prices and great selection. Plaid pillows, one bright color pillow and another item in room (the end table, but could be lamp, vase, picture) done in a bright color to match pillow in intensity. And the upholstered ottoman adds a fun touch, but sized to match the sofa. Again a rustic trad feel with a pair of large photos over sofa. Great ottoman, lamps, footstool. Pillows match colors in photos of family members.... These are just inspiration but it might help you select the items that the room needs to frame and support the sofa style and colors. Nothing set in stone but a place to begin....See Morehow can I make this space better
Comments (9)If it's within your budget, one idea could be to add a built-in banquette where you have the bench currently. I would run it along the back wall with the window (from about where the window ends) and along the bench wall. This would give you a bit more seating, and then perhaps your table could run a bit longer. I really like the paint color as is, but nice bright white to match the wainscoting could feel really fresh as well. Do you have any collections of kitchen-like things? Maybe glass bottles, or old kitchen scales....it could be really cool to have some shelves on the wall between the window and the corner and showcase any sort of collection you may have. For the larger wall you could do a photo gallery wall. If you stay with the same paint color, I would go with white frames. If you lighten the wall color, black could be nice to tie in with the fireplace. I'll attach some photos for ideas. Good luck!...See MoreHow can i make my room look better?
Comments (8)Your idea books show your love of traditional library decor and rich colors. I think. That your current wall color, however, clashes with the lovely color of your new sofa bed. And you do seem to have too much furniture in the room at this point. I think that I would, first, strip all of your wall paper and prime your walls. Then I would fin a traditional oriental style rug for your room and center it. From the rug, I would choose a complimentary color for your walls. Then....I would begin to build your room. The perfect location for your “library area” would be in the nook where your sofa currently resides. The entire wall could be book shelves. What kind of storage does your room require? (There is no closet.). Do you need the little glass cases in the corner? If you need a dresser for guests, the large dresser will work. You could place the tv on it or hang it on the wall above it. Your sofa needs end tables with reading lamps on it. I think the sofa would look best on the top wall in the room. Centered. The TV on the left wall as you enter it. And the room could use a chair in which to sit and read, too. Located close to the window with the radiator on the right, and in front of your library wall. This is a one step at a time project. But I would start with finding a lovely rug for your room that works with the sofa. Good luck!...See MoreVanessa Z
