Looking for flowering allium bulbs. All I have are Purple Sensation so I would love some more. I have the following, let me know if you're interested. Bergenia purpurea Cranesbill/geranium - looks like shepherd's warning to me Daisies - white Day Lily - Yellow stella d'oro Ferns - various Heliopsis - unnamed - close to Tuscan Sun but grows approx 4ft Hosta - various unnamed varieties (most are either solid blues or green with variegated edges) Liriope - white - divisions/runners Rose Campion Rosemary - its looking a little rough but I'm sure someone more experienced in growing rosemary could do it some go Salvia May Night Sedum Autumn Joy (unrooted cuttings) Bulbs: unnamed daffodils, tulips and muscari

WWII Memorial (lt. mauve/white), Fragrant Cloud (shocking orange red), Grande Dame (dk. pink), Pink Peace (med. to dk. pink), Pope John Paul II (white), Spiced Coffee (pink/yellow/tan-ish), Sugar Moon(white), Valencia (yellow/apricot) and Tahitian Sunset (orange/yellow) have the biggest hybrid tea blooms in my garden. I should add though, that these are cool weather blooms, as most shrink in our heat. All of the above are also highly fragrant. Of the lot, I would say Pope John Paul II is the most heat resistant (doesn't shrink). Most disease resistant (for my area) would be PJPII, Grande Dame, Valencia and Sugar Moon.

Hi SusiQ, I'm fairly new at growing alliums, but here are some basics. First, you need to distinguish between ornamental alliums (basically, the named varieties) and edible alliums like garlic and onion. The ones grown for flowers are the ornamentals. 1. Allium with a short a - like alley - um. 2. Ornamental allium bulbs are perennial. You just leave them in the ground and they come back, and even multiply, next year. (Having said that, I am in zone 4, I don't know if zone 7 is too hot for that. Your local nursery or master gardener program should be able to tell you.) 3/4. As I mentioned, the named varieties (Globemaster, drumstick, etc.) are ornamentals. The bulbs are not meant to be eaten. I believe they are classified as onions. 5/6. Garlic isn't generally grown for the flowers, but for the bulbs. As you noticed, garlic smells like garlic. The ornamentals I grow don't smell. 7. Don't know, I've never tried them. 8. I have an allium caeruleum in a vase right now because it fell over in the garden. It was in the garden for at least a week before I picked it and has been in the vase for about 5 days now and still going strong. (The allium in the garden have been going for a couple of weeks and still look great despite an incredible June hot spell of 90's for the last week (by comparison, the rose buds bloomed and wilted within two days in this heat). Hi Darren, One of the largest flowered Morning Glories that I've grown was Tie Dye Blue from Park Seed. (see link below) The flowers were nearly 7 inches across when the plant first started to flower. As the summer progressed and the weather turned hotter the flower size decreased. (This is normal for most flowering plants.) I mention this with one caveat: This variety tends to produce somewhat split flowers that don't hold their shape properly, no doubt due to the large size of the flowers. The flowers are so large and fragile that wind or rain tends to damage the flowers easily. Still the color combination is stunning (purple with white and lavender stripes) that I would forgive the plant this fault. ;-) An added bonus is the variegated foliage which is mottled with mint green, cream, and dark green. Even when not in flower the foliage is stunning. Another variety with large flowers is called Mt. Fuji Mix. This variety produces flowers in shades of sky-blue, purple. lilac, lavender, salmon, pink, and deep rose--each with white "starred" throats and wide rim of pure white. This variety is available from Park Seed also. Oh, almost forgot to add: There is also a Tie Dye Pink with similarly marked flowers. Again, this is available from Park Seed.
