Help - need ideas to disguise neighbor's ugly wall
Comments (3)How about growing something on it? You could make or buy a trellis (or several) and grow clematis or roses on it. If you're in a zone with cold winters, you can choose something evergreen like ivy (this doesn't even need a trellis). I can't really tell from your description how much sun this wall would get, but you'd have to choose your plants carefully depending on the light. http://img4-3.sunset.timeinc.net/i/how-to-books/00/wall-panels--l.jpg?400:400 How to make a cheap, functional trellis: http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-make-a-cucumber-trellis/index.html...See MoreNeed a little help with cabinet color to disguise countertop
Comments (17)Classic white never fails, you already have white shelves and refrigerator. At some point remove the 4" riser and install white subway tile... I hope you know what you are doing, as others alluded to painting cabinets is a lot of work- and 80% has to happen before you open the first can of paint. It can be done if you are careful and methodical. If that does not describe your personality live with the oak....See MoreUpdating Help! Remove Pillars?
Comments (15)Update to what?? Your house is a fairly well-proportioned American Colonial Revival, not unknown in Ontario. The "piece" over the door is a characteristic colonial broken pediment. The shutters on the bay windows are inappropriate, as indeed are those in the house pictured below. Shutters must look like they would cover the windows if closed, even if they are fixed to the house. Also anachronistic are your ganged central casement windows. The bay windows are another out of era choice. (But the cost of changing those out would be prohibitive.) American Colonial Revival Home, Waterford, Ontario Peel away the colonial embellishments, you're left with a characterless rectangular box. Turn it into an elaborate southern Colonial Revival as suggested above? Now, that's really out of character for the area! Strengthening and reinforcing the style of what you already have would be the simplest most appropriate "updating" to undertake. That might include more attention to porch details such as stair and porch railings, which, btw, would be required to pass OBC if this were a new build. And, please no fake add-on dormers!...See MoreKitchen : help to disguise or create a feature of the stair bulkhead
Comments (2)I think a tapered boxing would look better, assuming that the stairs rise over the kitchen. It's just too top heavy and the tapered boxing (with the front plane a right angle triangle) would give it some room to breathe. You can put some blue tape in the projected possible line of taper over the current box to try to visualize it....See MoreAlex R
