Low Voltage U/C Wiring Help (also posted in Electrical Wiring)
Comments (1)The transformer should be in an accessible location. There should be a switch between the 120V line and the transformer. You really don't want to have the transformer being fed electricity all the time. Using the transformer as a junction box is not the best idea. In other words, probably no....See More8 wires from electrical box for ceiling light
Comments (7)Thank you @w0lley32! I tested the wire bundles with a contactless voltage tester today. Here are the results: Nut 1 (black - 3 black wires, 1 white wire): high reading, regardless of whether switch is off Nut 2 (red - 3 white wires): zero reading, regardless of whether switch is off Nut 3 (red - 1 black wire): high reading when switch is in on position; low reading/beeping when switch is in off position Does that information confirm or modify anything you suggested above?...See MoreTesting Electrical Supply Wires and Solenoid
Comments (3)Two things at the master valve: 1. The installer did not cap the connections with wire nuts as is the case at all station control valves. Is it possible that time and exposure has led to the connection(s) becoming corroded enough to lose enough current to energize the solenoid when called for from the controller? As you probably are well aware, the wire coming from the controller is solid gauge whereas the leads coming off of the solenoid are strand type. 2. I have disconnected the master valve electrical leads and get a steady ( no fluctuating) 83.5 ohms reading. From what I have been able to research so far this falls within the range of normal operating ohms for some Rain Bird valves....See MoreHow to find the wires in an all electric ceiling and the studs
Comments (5)Do you have an attic right above the ceiling, or another floor? For the most part, if you hit a joist you should be clear of cabling. If you have blueboard with plaster as many of those era houses have, it is sometimes difficult for a stud finder to find the stud. But there are other ways depending on attic vs floor, like looking beside the ceiling electrical box or a ceiling register to see the direction of joists, or understanding the basic structure of the house knowing typical spans or rafter direction, or using small nails that don't require intrusive patching, etc. However, regardless of the cabling it might be smart to verify your ceiling joists size to hang such a point load that is moving. You may need some blocking or other methods to support the swing....See Moredennisgli
