Anybody out there do big stitch quilting?

I am piecing a quilt top currently and I plan to quilt it by hand using the big stitch method. This is my first hand-quilted attempt. Any tips for success? I have watched lots of demos on it.

I finished! It didn't take as long as I thought it would. I used perlé size 8 thread in bright, visible colors. I gave it a gentle wash and dry before I gifted it and it washed up beautifully.

Wow! You are brave. I love the look of it, but it seems as if it would take forever.

I can't help you on tips, as I've never hand quilted. I look forward to seeing the result.

Historically the tiny stitches held the 'loose' cotton batting together. Otherwise it would bunch-up over time. What are you using for batting? Check the package and see what spacing is recommended.

I'm in Peoria and I bought a quince tree (Smyrna), and I thought I had a perfect spot picked out for it, but I'm getting conflicting info about their size. The tree is currently about 10 ft tall and it's prety much a "whip" doesn't go sideways much (which is what I want) I don't mind it growing upwards, but this spot doesn't have a whole lot of room to grow sideways as it is close to an RV gate driveway. Also, I'd be interested if anybody actually has one, I'd love to see what they look like after a few years. Thanks.

I use 100% cotton and have not had a problem...yet. I use to use all purpose thread all the time and ran into a bad spool. In that case it kept breaking while I was sewing. At least with the timing I was able to change thread and save my self further aggrivation. I still use the all purpose thread from time to time and haven't had a problem since. I think bad spools can happen to any kind of thread. From my experiences and what others are saying it isn't common. I say use the thread you are most comfortable with. Foxy.

Both my older Viking and my new one will do the stitch...but I found out the hard way that it is not a stitch that I want to use. If you make a mistake and want to "un-stitch" - it is a bi!ch to get it out of your quilt. I never use it! Teresa

I started quilting before machine quilting was a thing and I love it. It does take a long time, but it is very meditative to me. And (depending on the size of the quilt) is a portable craft so good for road trips and such. Things that helped me in more traditional hand stitching was, using a hoop (aI rarely do anymore, but needed it when I was starting), beeswax on the thread to prevent tangles, and finding a needle and thimble that were comfy...well, comfy as possible...it's an awkward thing before you get used to it.

I've tried big-stitching a bit, but probably need to follow your lead and watch more videos on it. I've had some challenges in finding the right thread/needle/stitch combo. That said, I love the look of it, and it's more forgiving than the traditional hand-stitch methods, so I'll be staying with it (and watching more videos.) Hope that's helpful. Good luck and have fun.
