Painting Cabinets White - Should I get white hinges?
Comments (26)Can anybody who has had cabinets painted + new doors and drawer faces tell me the price + approx square footage of kitchen? I had this done in 2012. I live in the SF Bay Area, so my costs are right up there. My kitchen is 10x10 and I didn't change the footprint at all. I got 25 new doors (including end panels), some large, some smaller, 7 drawer fronts, all paint grade maple. Decora shaker doors/end panels and slab drawer fronts. The cost, through my KD was just over $1K. I had everything painted professionally and that was a lot more, $4.3K. All the doors/drawer fronts were done in the painter's shop and the cabinet frames were done in place. The creamy white paint is the catalyzed stuff and has worn like iron. I had a general contractor do the door and hinge installation and other work in the kitchen, so I can't say how much of his fee was just cabinet-related. Initially I thought I'd have everything refaced. My cabs were golden oak. Home Depot sent out a guy to my house and he insisted I listen to a canned sales pitch. I wasn't born yesterday and didn't like his manner or approach. I asked, bottom line, how much. He threw out $10K, clearly uninterested in doing the work. I ended up paying $20K for my entire kitchen, including new quartz counter, backsplash, lighting, etc. Everything but the wood floor, including labor. If I were doing this sort of facelift again, I would do it the same way....See MoreHow should I finish the wall behind my farmhouse style bathroom vanity
Comments (10)Sorry took so long to update....These are some photos of the bathroom, although it was still not completely finished at the time these were taken. The door and shelves have been stained a Carbon gray gel stain that almost perfectly matches the vanity. I used 8" white shiplap through out. The wall lights purchased through Lowe's online. The mirror purchased at Pier 1. The shower tile feature is carrera marble patterned, and a sea grey tile purchased at 'The Tile Shop' in Urbandale, Iowa. The laminate wood floors are from Home Depot in Mushroom? or the next grayer color. The vanity is 60" dark grey with carrera marble top, sink, and faucet included. I changed the knobs. I think I ordered from Houzz but can't remember. It's also on Wayfair. It all looks better in person than in the photos. I don't love that the toilet is right in the middle as you open the door but I didn't want the hassle of changing the layout/footprint of the bathroom. Overall I am happy with my choices. The mirror is a little fancy to me but my husband loved it and the design echos the patterned shower tile so I went with it....See Morewhat color should I paint behind the pellet stove?
Comments (4)If you don't have any pattern in this room and that would go with your style, how about a pattern? You have a very neutral room, so almost any color will do. Black will make the stove look more like it belongs here - I don't have a problem with black. The only problem with black is if this is a small room, black in this space may visually chop the room in half (won't give it unity and cohesion). If you chose a color that is the same as your walls, you will create a most cohesive look. I know you didn't ask about the lighting, but I would like to comment, if I may. Ceiling lighting in a living room or bedroom doesn't do anyone any favors. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height....See MoreWhat should I do on the wall behind a wood stove?
Comments (3)I would like to see the chimney and firewall be the same material. If it were mine, I'd probably add brick behind to match and paint it all white (with a heat resistant paint, of course). I would then think about a tile for the floor that is closer to the wood color (but not a wood look tile) so it blends in, or maybe make a statement with a patterned cement tile. Does your woodstove brand have matching stovepipe available? If so, I'd switch it out for burgundy pipe. I don't know the technical aspects of using tile, but some of these with white tile is a more modern/contemporary look than the brick. not this stone, but with matching burgundy stovepipe: white brick: tile? fun hearths: this one with white brick...See Morehoussaon
