are my beeches ok?

last year

I have several dawyck green beech trees that were planted about 5 years ago. They seem to be growing and thriving well. They are all about 15-20’ tall now. But they are all, well, floppy. Is this normal? My wife wanted me to tie them up. I don’t know, will this help, or is it even necessary? Thanks for any advice you can give.

They look pretty normal to me, considering they are so cramped and confined. They are incredibly close to the house. They are about 1/3 of their potential height at the moment and they broaden with age.

more leaves means more food production.. means faster root growth.. means faster to getting 'established' ... cutting off leaves.. or branches.. is counter productive at this time ... in a year or two.. it will have a good enough root mass for you to start shaping it into what you want ... make sense ??? be patient.. you just planted it.. you didnt really expect the screen to happen upon planting.. did you ... ken

This really happened to me. I colored my hair golden blond at home and didn't like the color. So I went to the beauty supply store and bought something called "color remover". I thought it would restore my hair to its natural original color. NOT. It stripped it to a nasty gray-white. I headed to the nearest beauty salon and the operator said "You've ruined your hair." She applied an ash blond toner or rinse which then turned my hair gray. I hated it! Took about a year till my own hair grew out.Now I only have my hair professionally colored.

That's exactly what I did with my DW and it's worked well. It don't think it cost any more, since everything had to be pulled out anyway to remove the cabinets. The installer had to re-run the water and waste lines no matter where the DW was, so it didn't matter that I moved it. I moved mine because all my dishes, etc are in cabinets on the right side of the sink and my DW was on the left, which never worked for me. I had to walk across the kitchen to put things in the cabinets. Moving it makes unloading much easier.

One reason, I think, is that painted cabinets (at least white) are so "classic" for kitchens that they are hard to date as they have been used (sometimes more, sometimes less) ever since kitchens have had cabinets. (My grandmother had them in her 1950's built kitchen.) Also--the lighter colors keeps things light and bright. I think right now it is partly a reaction to the darker, and heavier look of the dark cherry or espresso cabinets with dark granite kitchens that were so popular in the early 2000's. Also, with today's more open floor plans, you can end up with too much of the stained wood look everywhere if you have stained wood cabinets AND the usual hardwood flooring AND the wood furniture typically found in the adjacent dining and family rooms. White or cream is especially easy to coordinate with whatever is going on in the adjacent rooms. I also think that many of us have experienced the finish on wood cabinets starting to wear and look unappealing! It seems that when a style is first popular with designers, we see beautiful examples done well and it looks so "fresh". Then the style eventually catches on with the general public, and we start to see it done everywhere, and often done "badly" by basic builders and diy'ers, i.e. cheaper materials and used inappropriately without understanding basic design concepts, etc. (Cheap oak cabinets and mosaic tile backsplashes are a great example of this. You've probably seen examples of contemporary style, busy mosaic backsplashes used to try and "update" an older traditional style 1980's kitchen with horrid results!) But--as someone who works in the flooring and décor section of a big box store, lots of people are still coming in looking for tile to go with their new wood-stained cabinets. They are either blissfully unaware, or don't care, that painted cabinets are supposed to be the most popular choice for kitchen cabinets these days! Just my 2 cents.

Is there any concern of damage to my house or foundation? Or is it more that the tree will suffer and not grow well?

TBH, both, but neither is the main concern in my opinion. Trees won't damage a truly sound foundation but this looks like an historic property so the possibility of it having a weak spot is higher. But even if that isn't the case you are going to end up with a tree that is essentially being espalied along a building surface that really isn't suitable for that. Would have made more sense to plant, well, only 1 in the space pictured, and plant it at least a couple meters away from building.

What I find more compelling is how you got them this big in only 5 years. Either they were very large and expensive when planted, or you fertilized the heck out of them and lived in some part of the world with ideal conditions for their fast, but not necessarily durable, growth. ALL of the grafted beeches I've bought for my garden over the last 15 years had knotted roots. I managed to save some in time, not others. Were these B&B or container grown? Either way, unless you that was addressed, it's another possible ticking timebomb. Although I would tend to assume they do not have the problem, if they leapt forward with > 2' of growth each year. What I found with my beeches is they grew barely at all with knotted roots, and took off when I corrected the problem. Because their roots could then branch out into the surround soil for the water and nutrients needed for growth. But if u were dumping water and fertilizer on them for the past 5 years and they could just keep growing a bigger 'knot', maybe that explains this seemingly fast growth.
