Yes they can both work in the space, but I'm not loving either one of them. I would keep looking.

Left is best. Here’s why. When combining prints, the “scale” should be two levels of size difference. So in this case the pattern on rug is moderate so pattern on the ottoman should be smaller as left one is. 😀

The long wall can be customized to have storage, your tv (if needed), books, and definitely desks for the kids. It will add a lot of character to your space as well. You should start a completely separate post for ideas for that wall. You can do so much with all that space!

The stripe works best with the rug. Put the little table between the two chairs.

I would rather see a strap bench under the console than either of the two.

This room has soooo much potential!! If you are open to some changes, I would start with making the long wall a feature wall. A deep mid century color would be so calming and inviting. Put the console centered on that wall. Angle the two chairs facing toward the feature wall. Add a large wide leaf plant. And large art on wall facing the windows. Bbl

Thanks, Flo- do you think the console would be too small along the long wall? I was thinking it would be great to add some desks in here for the kids to do crafts, homework, etc too. Very open to ideas! I’m a visual person!

Lots of options you could incorporate here. This is a concept, but if budget allowed you could do a desk either side of console maybe a Ikea hack. I have to run now, but will try desks later today.

To keep costs low, I searched for items to incorporate two desk surfaces that work with the console and other decor. I found some good buys. The small desks could be topped with a piece of tempered glass or acrylics to have cleanable surfaces. I found chairs with MCM look and could be used for desk chairs or extra seating. A pair of leather stools could also slide under either console or each desk. This gives you some options at relatively low cost.

Personally, I would keep this room as Adult space and keep arts and crafts elsewhere. But you wanted to see it. Maybe the visuals will convince you to keep it as conversational/reading room. 😀

Looks like with or without the desks, you’re suggesting the console move to the long wall. So then would you put anything else on the short wall other than art? (Furniture?)

We considered a tv in there too but maybe that would be too many things going on in one room?

Yes I would not overload this space with furniture. So simple complimentary art on short wall. If you post the width and length of the room along with length of openings that would let me do a actual scale drawing for furniture placement.

I would not put a TV in this room. Especially if you have TV in family room setting. You don’t have much room.
