The dreaded where do I end my backsplash question
Comments (20)I am leaning towards bringing it around to the window wall at the same height but I do have a granite riser/sill under the window so will this look okay? Absolutely fine. I love the the look of a herringbone backsplash in a solid neutral color but is that going to be too busy for my kitchen? It will be lovely with the right tile and grout combo. What is your tile budget in $/sf? With your cabinet and granite neutral is key, but lighter neutrals are going to be better choices than more saturated hues. The images below are from Fireclay Tile and show Feldspar, Gardenia, and Tusk. Gardenia is one of my favorites, as is Tusk, and both are part of the Foundations line that runs $15/sf for several sizes including 3"x6" tiles. You can order samples from the website, or look for tiles of similar shades at local tile showrooms. Keep in mind that you will likely want bullnosed edge and/or trim pieces available for whichever tile you choose....See MoreHouseplan Redo Question
Comments (33)You know, the comments that are snarky from architects on this column are a detriment to your profession. Going to an architect, in my experience and the experience of a neighbor, can be an experience in guessing. The client is worried about that architect's style, pricing, detail, turn around, etc. And the client is afraid to give a lot of information and not be heard. Can I change what you draw? How many times? I had no idea after I left an architect's office if it will be a 8K design or a 22K design. And I respect architects and their work! In my opinion, that is a field that would do residential customers a great service by re-marketing their offerings so that the client knows what to expect before they walk in the door. Unless you are wealthy, pre-build is a very frightening time!...See MoreRedoing family room, need help with decor, colors. Brown leather couch
Comments (9)Really nice room. Looks comfortable and inviting. Good choice w/new sofas. Like the fireplace as is ... but less clutter could improve the look of it. Not sure what the picture is above the piano. If it is a family photograph, reframe it and the family photo on the mantel with the same frames and put both above the piano. Really like your coffee table. One day it will be a valuable antique if you don't booger it up. So, for the coffee table, consider taking the table to a glass company and having a dark gray tinted thick glass top created for it -- no refinish for the table necessary. (Alternately, cover everything but the top and paint the top only -- perhaps black or else the same white as your cabinets.) Do the same for your current end table as you do for the coffee table. If you're going to add a second end table, since matching the existing one would likely prove difficult, consider a totally different look -- perhaps a wood 2-drawer filing cabinet? http://realsolidoak.com/office.html...See MoreOrdering the dreaded vertical blinds-questions on options
Comments (6)I'm not an authority on vertical blinds, but the headrail should be even above the door, and since it'll be a one way draw, I don't think you can leave that much space for stackback outside the window. It wouldn't look nice to see that much headrail on the other side with nothing on it when it's open. I believe it's recommended to leave about 3 or 4in. on each side. It stacks pretty tight, but some of the glass will be covered. I think I would call or email the company and check with them about measurement before you order to be on the safe side....See Moretdemonti
